HunterZ posted : It may have been because we were wanting to switch the cable TV account name at the same time. That whole experience at the local office was a bit frustrating; in response to our asking for a name change, the rep actually canceled the existing account and opened a new one without asking if that was okay with us. She then tried to get me to pick a new service plan on the spot (which I wasn't prepared to do) because she said the plan we had was no longer going to be available due to the fact that Comcast was about to go all-digital at the time for their TV service.

I told her to just set up Internet service (and she said there would be no interruption in service due to the switchover, which as previously mentioned did not turn out to be the case) and I went home to research our options for TV service. That worked out really well because we got a really good contract package for the cable TV service (after showing a polite and helpful phone CSR the ad on their site and waiting 20 minutes for her to find out how to actually access that deal in their systems).

I do have to say that Comcast seems to have a lot of nice phone CSRs that really do want to help you resolve your issues if you talk to them politely. Unfortunately they're often buried under 5+ minutes of automated messages and phone trees, followed by 10-60 minutes of hold time :P

HunterZ posted : I'm also curious as to what the best specific procedure is for doing this, as (I think - can't double-check since I'm at work) we're currently renting a Motorola SB5120 from Comcast but also own another SB5120 of our own that was packed away when we got our service connected.

On a related note: when we got our service "connected" earlier this summer it was actually supposed to be a simple name change on the service, but the person at our local Comcast office said she had to close the account and open a new one in order to change the name. She said there would be no service interruption, but eventually when the connection switched to the new account all I could get was that screen that Hal A mentioned that has customer and technician links.

I remember the customer link being useless, but I was able to push through the technician link. Still, it didn't seem to get things working. I called Comcast and let it do a remote reset, but that didn't help either. Eventually I ended up talking to a (very nice) CSR who couldn't find anything wrong on Comcast's end. She asked me to shut down all computers in the house except for one, and then she did another remote reset. After that, things seemed to magically work. The CSR then had me go to a specific Comcast URL to enter some account info, but I think that was just to set up an email address.

I think that's the third Comcast cable internet service activation in a row that I've had trouble with. The first was due to the technician throwing a self-install kit at me and running away without adequately testing the connection to the jack (the following technician determined that my exterior splitter or wiring or something was bad and replaced it). The second was due to the technician improperly reading the MAC address or serial # or whatever of the modem, causing activation to fail.

PGHammer posted : The U model only connects via USB (the standard SB-5101 and SB-5120 connect either via USB or wired Ethernet). I have tried the SB-5120 both ways, and USB is slower than wired Ethernet (I've compared to both card-based 100 Mbps Ethernet and built-in gigabit Ethernet - the card-based 100 Mbps Ethernet is Olde Reliable 3com 3C905-TX (a pull from an ex-Netware LAN client; Windows Vista is the first NT-based operating system that *didn't* include drivers for this workhorse), while the gigabit Ethernet is built into chipsets from Intel (875P) and nVidia (nForce 7100/630i); so in no case was it Brand X). I'm no fan of USB-only cable modems (this isn't Moto's first example of one, either; the company has had USB-only versions of the previous SURFboard models SB-3100 and SB-4100 as well) for the simple reason that it makes modem sharing difficult, if not impossible/impractical; further, there is absolutely no reason whatever for any computer (desktop or portable) to fail to support wired Ethernet out of the box (and that includes netbooks).

Price? Please; wired Ethernet (even in netbooks) is a checkbox item, as every chipset for netbooks (without exception) supports wired Ethernet as standard; in fact, most support wireless (up to wireless-G) as well.

anon posted : I just returned my just purchased Motorola SB 5101U (still don't know the diff between 5101 and 5101U) but the 5101U didn't have standby button on top and only 5 lights on front instead of 6. Salesman said the 5101U had latest firmware so I figured great. Got home Friday, installed it and my upload and download speeds DROPPED by close to half. Went from 25-26 Mbps to 11 Mbps download. Upload from 2.8 to 1.5. I should add I have been leasing a Motorola SB 5120 for a year and was happy with the speeds but didn't want to lease any longer. So I packed up the SB 5101U and returned it today and put the leased SB 5120 back in service, ran a speed test and the numbers jumped back up immediately to 26.5 D - 2.8 U . Will keep using the SB 5120 for now until I figure out why this happened. It drove me nuts all weekend, switching back and forth , getting new MAC addresses, running at least 25 speed tests etc. Someone said the chipset in the SB 5120 is a better one and handles a weaker signal better than the 5101. I have no idea. If I knew the SB 6120 would solve the problem, I would purchase that one but until I research more , I'll have to stick with the leased SB 5120. Any other suggestion for a good modem that will at least maintain my prior speeds?
