| Is the unlimited service really unlimited?
Hi folks,
I'm so sick of Verizon's five GB limit I can't stand it anymore. So, I'm thinking about looking in to the unlimited data plan option from Millenicom, but I just have a couple of questions.
First, is this truly unlimited, Or, will I get seriously throttled the minute I step one toe over five GB? I'm looking ot perhaps use ten to fifteen GB a month.
And, second, what in everyones opinion would be the best modem to use with this service? My nephew actually has, though we've never used it, a Sprint Pantech 500 (think that's what it's called) in his pc card slot on his laptop, but I was thinking more along the lines of a USB based modem, one that an external antenna could be hooked up too or from which a coffee can antenna could be strung.
Thanks for any advice. ~Ann |

| reply to tate886 When I was using Hughsnet exclusively, I had to send updated video files to clients for review via DVD and FedEx. I've had Sprint wireless broadband now for two weeks and have been sending files via ftp upload and also to a streaming server, I've had got to have reach the 5GB limit by now speeds are good no throttle, love this new service and I'm hoping that Sprint doesn't get religion and do what Verizon did. I'd also be willing to pay for a monthly usage fee for data sent over the 5GB limit as long as it was reasonable.
If you go with Millenicom as most will recommend, sign up for their bring your own modem. I got their Franklin 680 which I have to admit has been trouble free so far but most on this forum would disagree, it has allot of problems depending on location. Jim has suggested in the past to use his coffee can approach on one of the carriers one month tryout plans. Then send the modem back drop their service and sign up with Millenicom, no taxes and no contract! -- Franklin CDU-680, CradlePoint 350, DLink 655 router, HG2424G Grid antenna, Cyfre Amp. |

| reply to tate886 Yes, it's unlimited at this time. That doesn't mean that in the future it will remain so, but so far so good.
As for devices, probably the most recommended one would be the Sierra 598U (I don't believe it's listed in the supported devices list on Millenicom's site, but they do). I personally have the Franklin, which has served me quite well, and I like it due to it having a better ##DEBUG screen that gives much more info than most, if not all other devices. However I started service before the BYOD package was available and since I've not had any issues with the Franklin I've stuck with it. -- Windows XP Pro SP3 / Windows 7 64bit RC|AMD Phenom X3 8650|Asus M3N72-D Motherboard|4GB Patriot PC2-8500 1066MHz RAM|EVGA GeForce GTS 250 1GB Ram Superclock Edition |

| reply to tate886 I recommend these devices for the Millenicom BYOD plan:
Sierra Wireless Compass 597U or 598U Novatel Ovation U760 or U727
These are all USB modems. You can get them quite reasonably on »www.ebay.com Be sure the seller states it has a clean ESN, if not ask.
I've bought dozens this way with no issue at all. -- ... need help? »evdo-tips.com/ |

| reply to tate886 I second what Jim_in_VA says. I started out with a Franklin CDU-680 on the unlimited plan but kept having disconnects with it and it also tended to connect to multiple RNs at the same time.
I bought a used Sierra 598U from Ebay about two weeks ago and had it activated by Millinecom and have not had any problems since. |

| reply to tate886 If you do some digging here at DSLR, you'll find the preponderance of commentary about the Franklin CDU is negative; some users have had success with it, but way more, yours truly included, have had problems, disconnects, crashes, all sorts of crap. The Sierra 598U is a way better choice.
Jim_in_VA gives high marks to the Novatel U760 and U727, and his advice is always spot on, so this gives you a good choice of devices, all available on EBay, as Jim notes. -- Sierra 598U/Cradlepoint CTR500, grid antenna, Millenicom unlimited, 2 LinkSys WiFi a/p, 4 XPPro and 1 Ubuntu units, FireFox everywhere. |
