kaybertoss posted : Successfully running W7 now after pulling my hair out trying to resolve a distorted display problem. There was no mention of this after running Windows upgrade adviser.

Anyhow, anyone with this hybrid ASRock (4CoreDual-VSTA) MOBO, moving from XP to 7 will get a distorted display running a Nvida AGP Vid card. Actually occurs in Vista too (AFTER YOU DO A WINDOWS UPDATE NOTIFICATION FOR VID CARD DRIVER) but wasn't aware of it until I moved to W7 as I skipped Vista.

I initially gave up on W7 and experimented with installing Vista, I found Vista's embedded driver fine until you update the driver after initial install. I also should mention I have a trusty old Nvidia 6600GT.

ASRock MOBO in question.....

ASRock FAQ on this issue.....

"2.Q: I’m using NVIDIA AGP card under Windows Vista on my 775Dual-VSTA / 4CoreDual-VSTA / 4CoreDual-SATA2. When I rate the computer’s performance, the screen suddenly becomes abnormal. Why?
A: The problem happens with newer Nvidia VGA driver version 1xx.xx (i.e. 163.69) Please change your Nvidia driver to older version 9x.xx (i.e. 97.19) to solve this problem."

I Installed the old 97.19 drivers and the problems gone in W7. Tested this in Vista and W7 with positive results.

Forceware Vista 97.19 WHQL Driver »downloads.guru3d.com/Forceware-V···535.html

Only problem during the initial install and set-up with W7 is that is has embedded drivers that cause the distorted display so it can be tricky getting past the first set-up prompts until you can finally get to the desktop where strangely enough the problem clears up. From here you can install the older Vid Card drivers.

Another oddity is when you right click on the desktop to personalize and change the theme to Windows 7 basic it sends the display into the same distortion problem. If you look through the distortion and click back on Aero theme the display goes back to normal.

So, I'm limited to the 97.19 drivers, fortunately no issues so far. I also have to make sure to avoid the embedded drivers in W7.

After the first attempt to install W7 and trying everything under the sun to fix this I gave up on running W7 and thought I'd try Vista for the heck of it.

Vista initially installed without a hitch so I really thought it was a W7 bug but after I allowed a Windows Vista Vid card driver update I was left with the same distorted display problem as W7.

After lots of Googleing and checking the MOBO manufactures web site over and over again I finally found the issue causing this problem as mentioned above.

I've installed most things from XP, even my beloved COD2 and it actually works!

Hope this may help someone else with this combination but I don't think that there are many of us out there.
