| [TWC] 3 questions...
Hi- I posted a question yesterday "My DSL versus RR Cable Turbo w/Powerboost", but the thread is locked. What causes a thread to become locked?
My second question is: when I connected the modem to my MacBook via an ethernet cable, I can't get the internet working, but if the modem is connected to the Apple Extreme router, everything works.
Any reason why connecting the modem directly to the MacBook doesn't work?
My third question is, what does it mean when a modem is "provisioned"?
Thanks! |

| Provisioned means the modem has been set up by TWC in order to operate.
When u connect directly to the MacBook, check the network panel (TCIP), if u see a Ip address starting with 169, click the renew DHCP lease button and see if it changes. If not unplug the modem and wait for it to reset. Ip address should never start with 169, thats a dummy ip generated by the operating system. |

| reply to Imagine88 1. You first thread was locked by a DSLR moderator because it just started a flame war. TWC has millions of internet customers and just because you have slow speeds doesn't mean everybody does. Troubleshoot your connection and come up with proof before spouting off such accusations.
2. The modem is configured to only allow the first device connected to it online. If you switch devices connected to the modem you have to power cycle it.
3. A provisioned modem is one that is authorized and configured by the provider to be online and receiving service. |

Many things can cause slow speeds. Coming from DSL I'd run and post the test results from this link first: »/tweaks |

| Thx for the /tweaks link. I don't really know what all of it means, but here's the link.

The "download speed advertised for your line" according to TWC is 10MB, which I think is 81920 kbit/s.
When I try downloading from several ftp test servers, I always get below 3MB download speeds. I'm trying to better this as I always get over 6MB with dsl.
Thanks! |

| Imagine88,
Your getting confused, your RR is 10Mbps (Megabits) not 10MBps(MegaBytes). so your rate for the speedtest should be 10,240kbps.
If your getting ~1.25MBps per sec downloads (megabytes) then your maxing your line out.
Can you double check your speeds? in most cases, OSes read in MBps, maybe post a screenshot of a FTP or HTTP Download? |

this way they can give you less speed |

| Rombus-
Here's the ftp screenshot.
The ftp site is: ftp1:optonline.net
Do you think my speeds are normal?
Thanks! |

You are testing via an ftp that is located in NY are you are in CA. RR doesn't do the best job of cross country routing - when I trace to the west coast from OH I generally get pings in the 105 ms range. When I trace to NY from OH, those pings run in the 50s. It's tough to max out a connection with 100+ ms of latency. Find a test server on the west coast (there are some on this site's speedtest page) and see how you do. |

| Very Slow Download |
Thanks for the tip oldbuzzard.
Here's a perfect example of how slow my downloads cab be. This started out 1.4MB and after 2 minutes, I got a staggering 63.7 KB/sec.
Something is definitely wrong in my set-up, somewhere, or TWC have a more serious problem than they think. |
