Sunfox posted : So you really think that if, over the course of a year, Rogers was completely unavailable between the beginning of March and early June we should still be satisfied? Because that's 70% uptime.

Edit: I love these 99% uptime guarantees you see flaunted around for "mission critical" stuff. Except that still means it can be offline for nearly 4 days over the course of a year. That's not really that exceptional...

sbrook posted : Even living in the sticks at the end of a flaky cable run, I cannot complain about the quality of my service per se. I have lots of complaints about Rogers business ethics mind you! Like stacking price increase on price increase in short order.

Congestion is a potential problem on a service that you must oversell. Outages happen and there isn't a thing you can do about them. Like the guy that drove off the road and plowed into a pole bringing down the fibre cable and destroying the repeater. Yes, there are ways to help reduce these things, but introducing redundancy costs big money.

When I moved to Canada from the UK, I was astounded that our power system was controlled using a single computer SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) system. I had previously been working on systems where 2 computers working in a hot-standby configuration was the norm, and in some places 3 computers ... live, hot standby and cold standby was not uncommon! But that's how things are done here.

Sure you've got a right to complain ... can't deny you that, but for what you pay per month you're getting a service which is not capable of providing a service that you can totally rely on with minimal downtime, particularly if you lose cash every time it goes down. It's like buying an old clunker car to use as a taxi (although some taxis are not a lot better than clunkers!) If the engine dies, that's it, game over.

Anyone remember when the entire rogers network went out for the night and took all of Ontario with it a few years ago? Lasted about 8hrs before they got it straightened out. I'll be plainly blunt. 20min is squat, 2hrs is getting on annoying. 3hrs is too long. If you have the attention span of a gnat and can't grab a book for 20min to read then find something to relax with. Then again there were gamers that put up with rogers peering issues for 4months because of a dispute between Rogers and Global Crossing and AT&T couldn't get their shit worked out. YAY doesn't everyone love a 10k-28k ping?

One of my friends used to work for rogers, and we used to joke about how back when it was first launched if there was an outage for 20mins no one would complain. According to Rogers' Speedcheck I was getting speeds from 1.6Mpbs to 4Mpbs instead of 10Mpbs.

Connected with Rogers support via echat and we spent an hour checking my connection. Had to use two computers to ensure the problem was not at my end. Ticket is now with Engineering (whatever that means).

I did check my connectivity this morning (6am) and I was getting 9.9Mbps. Will check again this evening.
