I'm still trying to "follow the money" in Google's voice acquisitions. Haven't figured out how they plan to turn a profit out of all this.

My thought is that they are handing out the numbers for free right now. In the near future, they will start to charge $5 to $10 a month for the service expecting some people to drop it. However, given their extensive cross country fibre backbone that carries a lot of their other services, they will save money by not having to pay third parties to carry the voice.

Google, in a statement filed with the FCC two weeks ago, stated it has no near term plans to charge for Google Voice features that are currently free.

Thanks for the tidbit of info... Maybe they are making money off the termination charges?? ( Hopefully I used the correct term ther.)

I don't know about google voice, but google's free 411 service was originally started to test and increase reliability of their voice recognition software.

Very often as soon as Google announces an acquisition, the new signups of the acquired company is turned off.

If you want some extra (or a first) Gizmo5 account the time is NOW.

Everybody must be doing this, since their site is now really slow...

nahh that's not google's business model to charge consumers $5 a month. this is a drop in the bucket for them financial wise. they have the infrastructure now to challenge skype, which is what they will probably do.

I haven't seen this anywhere but TechCrunch (and other media quoting TechCrunch); has anyone seen anything that's been verified or corroborated?

it's such a little deal in context of everything else, but it's mentioned here: »www.forbes.com/2009/11/09/admob-···yahootix

Agree!! Does that include mobile telephony?

The Forbes article, like everyone else thus far, is quoting the TechCrunch article. It is still unconfirmed and based on TechCrunch's anonymous source.

I'll believe that when I see it. Gizmo is such a toy they'll have to change the whole image.

One heck of a good news the VOIP industry badly needed, particularly in terms of SIP innovation/penetration!!!
