| [Tweak Test] Lag in HL1 and 2 games

Not sure why, but when I play games like Natural Selection, Empires, TFC or TF2, I get pings ranging from 40 to 500... and the delay is so terrible it makes the games unplayable.
When downloading torrents or other such things, I get awesome speeds, often as fast as 1-2 MBps... and before you ask, yes. When I play, my browser AND torrents are closed.
Near as I can tell, the router is set up as good as it can get. This all started when I installed Windows 7 - any ideas? |

• You are running Vista so the normal tweaking is not possible (It would not help anyway).
• Read this FAQ and see if it help any. »Tweaking FAQ »I'm getting latency and/or packet loss. What can I do?
•Call VZ and tell them that you see packet loss and high latency at your hop. Ask for a signal check and a ping test for packet loss/latency.

| Well, I'm actually running Win7, but there's no option to select that on the testing.
I'll call VZ and see what they say - the FAQ's didn't have anything too helpful in it that I could do from my end  |

that game online as HL1 and HL2 that doesn't use TCP, most gaming online uses UDP so widely than TCP that reason is that UDP is much faster and efficient that use low overhead than TCP and I may suggest that you have to tune the IP buffer be increased in order to improved the UDP buffer space in another way to do that.

2 edits | Try registry edit, that should be in "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Afd\Parameters \DefaultReceiveWindow" to increase the buffer size that will help to handle the big delay issues over network delay latency so I suggest try either 512K or 1M of buffer size (that works with both TCP and UDP) that will help to handle the terrible delay issues if that helps. NOTICE: that may not work with vista or win7 since they are auto tune. I uses Linux that I can tweak my an advanced network parameter settings and I suggest is buy the windows vista or windows 7 resource kit book that for both system administrators and networking administrators

1 edit | type tracert in the command prompt to trace google.com web site that will takes you a trace of each hops in each latency what your packet take time to trip round that how much latency of time is you get from each hop passes of your packet traveling on the path to destination of google.com web site.
