Help setting up Ubuntu video

Used Ubuntu before (currently using Ubuntu 9.10), but for the life of me, having a hard remembering how to set up video card software (NVIDIA-Linux-x86-96.43.13-pkg1.run), also how do you even turn off x server.

Video card is Nvidia Geforce4 MX 420

The attached won't work, right now resolution is 800 x 600, with activating what's in the screen shot resolution goes to something like 600 x 5xx after restarting (recommended after activiting), fine before restart.

I have searched and searched. linux.com. ubuntu.com and nvidia.com have no explanation how to use NVIDIA-Linux-x86-96.43.13-pkg1.run, not even a 1000+ page book explains it.

Appreciate assistance, thank you.

Very frustrated, just about to go back to windows. Seems like I have troubles with video every time, everything else is fine.

Hello!

First off, yeah, setting up X can be a bit frustrating.

Lets make sure first off that all the ducks are in a row here.

Have you installed the restricted-extras package?
sudo apt-get install ubuntu-restricted-extras

That will pull in (among other things) the Nvidia driver

Oh, yeah.. Sometimes Anon posters get their posts held.. Im assuming thats whats going on?

if so, UbuntuHelp: You may consider joining here at DSLR, its pretty quick, and easy, and free. Plus, as a member, I think post holding goes away?

Unless William See Profile are you UbuntuHelp?

If so, I can understand your frustration, but a little patience helps out a lot.

Done, what next?

There are Nvidia stuff in Ubuntu Software Center under System Tools, but those don't work either.

Firstly, thanks for responding Jason. Yep, I'm original poster. Logged in so I don't have to wait for posts to show up.

When activated, screen resolution drops to 640 x 480 or something along those lines, and that is highest resolution, when deactivated resolution goes to 800 x 600. In other words, failed.

Okay..

I wonder if theres anything telling in the log.

Could you post your /var/log/Xorg.0.log file? perhaps theres some info in there we can look at, to see whats happening.

Requested file. Sure hope someone can make sense of it, or if it helps any.

Looks like its set a really low value for the hsync range

Hmmm..

Have you seen this thread?
»ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?···t8280317

It looks like an inelegant solution, but it may help you

Is the monitor an LCD, or a CRT?

CRT, not too comfortable altering files at this time, need more time to learn first.

I have a thread in this forum that explained quite a bit, just can't recall topic or when. Mainly turning off x server to install file in first post.

Well, you can always drop out of X by going into a single user mode.

sudo init 2

this will kill off X, and put you in as a text-only user. When ready to fire up X again, and try it,

sudo init 5

should get X going again, and drop you into the graphic logon screen.

(II) NV(0): : Using default hsync range of 31.50-37.90 kHz
(II) NV(0): : Using default vrefresh range of 50.00-70.00 Hz

Both those values are way low, and won't allow for much in the way of screen size/resolution. If your monitor isn't being recognized correctly, you might have to manually edit xorg.conf (and I understand you don't feel comfortable doing that).

UNDER "System', 'Control Center', 'Hardware', 'Display', what does it show for your monitor? Have you tried the 'Detect Monitors' tab there?

It doesn't matter so much that the correct brand shows up, but that the values are correct. What make/model monitor are you using? If you don't know the values for 'HorizSync' and 'VertRefresh' they may be on the back of the monitor, or a Google search should bring up the specs. Then someone can walk you through editing your xorg.conf if you feel up to it. I don't know if 'dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg' still works in 9.10, but that's also a handy command for accessing and correcting your video settings.

Nothing, and that does nothing.

Why it so hard for graphics, only problem there is.

as I understand dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg is depreciated in the latest few 'buntus Opting for a more automagic system. I dont know how one would trigger a reconfigure now off the top of my head.

Oh, and I guess init x isnt really working now in 9.10.. Maybe because its using upstart? So Im sorry if I misled you in my previous post.

And, yes.. X can be a pain sometimes, you may have to edit a file by hand, but it sounds a lot scarier than it really is.

Could I use xorg.conf here »Screen resolution

Above link isn't the topic I was referring to in this thread.

Hard for some, no problem for others - unfortunately you fall in the first category right now, but this is fixable.

Please, if you would, post the make and model of your monitor. If there are no values on a plate at the back, we can probably track them down and walk you through editing xorg.conf manually. Shame the 'dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg' command no longer works, but I suspected that.

Try to avoid the frustration you may be feeling, remain calm, and take it one step at a time.
