[TWC] Ok That's It. I'm Done With Time Warner Cable

Well, I've had Time Warner Cable (Road Runner) in 3 different locations. Let me start off by saying this is the Time Warner Midwest Ohio area (Dayton). I live in the city of Urbana though.

Once in Fort Hood, Texas
Once in North Lewisburg, Ohio

and now here in Urbana, Ohio.

The first two was decent since cable wasn't really popular and it was kind of new. Time Warner offered amazing support and instantly loading web pages and song downloads were just the highlight of my year once it was installed. (Anyone who's ever had to use Dial up before will understand why).

Well, let's fast forward to the year 2006 when I installed Time Warner at this location (Urbana, Ohio). It has been nothing but a nightmare to say the least about this company.

It started out small like every week there would be a couple disconnects or speeds would randomly slow down.. but w/e only a couple of times a week.. no big deal, but we still called out the customer service reps and oh boy aren't they a treat. Not only do they have no idea what they're doing, in the past 3 years the only thing they have done is replaced the modem and router, over and over and over again.

Well, in the past few months it's been hell. ALL DAY the internet just slows down to a halt and won't load web pages or any kind of activity what so ever for about 30 seconds then it resumes to normal. We get at least 2 disconnects a day and MAYBE it kicks back on that day/night. Some times (we have several computers hooked up through a router) it will just randomly pick a computer and won't let it connect. There are no firewalls blocking and connections on any computer, it's just completely random.

I'm so far past angry and I'm done calling out customer service reps who have absolutely no idea what they're talking about or doing. The last time they came here, they just opened up speedtest and ran that a few times and said they couldn't find any problems. Then they logged into some Modem interface and they couldn't read any of the terms on the page so they had to call their supervisor.. it's just.. good god.. The support for this company in this area is beyond wretched and a horrible abomination.

I've heard nothing but amazing things about Fiber Optic internet accept that it's pricy but it works and has no problems.

Time Warner, I have dealt with you and your idiotic customer service for 3 years and I'm done. Not to mention all of the equipment they have given us is from the year 1999-2000. Yes.. every single router/modem/piece of hardware they've given us has the sticker on it still and it's usually labeled from the year 2000. Thank god, they're staying on top of new hardware in this area.

Customer Service - 1/10
Sometimes you have to wait a couple of hours to get ahold of ANYONE and they don't keep track of your problem when you call, so you have to explain the problem again to every single person they transfer you to.

Uptime - 1/10
Uptime? HA I'm surprised it's up long enough for me to type this. We get disconnected a few times every single day.

Speed - 2/10
The speed is like a decent DSL line back from the early 2000s. When we first moved in we were getting amazing speeds but the speed of this service has slowly declined over the years to what is now absolute garbage.

Not to mention the upload speed is GOD AWFUL. Sharing any kind of files what so ever is a complete nightmare and takes up all the latency just even running file sharing programs and makes the service horrendously slow to the point you can't even browse the web.

Is it worth it? No.. you're better off going with Dial Up than this joke of an internet service. At least with Dial Up.. you know it'll do what it is supposed to do.. it's supposed to go slow and crash all the time, but with Time Warner you get the surprise of it always doing that.

Get ANYTHING and I do mean ANYTHING before you look into getting Time Warner. Maybe it's better in other areas but it is just absolutely horrible around here.. there is no benefits to this crap service.

If your modem signals are fine you're most definitely on an overloaded system. Have you seriously considered DSL saying this?

Well they said modem signals are fine and there's no sign of disconnects or anything in their little modem log or whatever.

No, I'm considering Fiber Optic internet because I'm a gamer and we have 4 computers to run on this internet. Cable should be able to do it but they're just not the same company they used to be.

Ah, ok. Out here I'm with DSL and it does the job pretty nicely with the line on FastPath. I'm a PC gamer too. I'd love to get Fiber Optic here any day, unfortunately I can only hope for FiOS at the moment since it'll cost me an arm and a leg to get a Fiber line out here.

Well perhaps i need to look into DSL then because later tonight, I'm going to smash the modem into pieces and I'm going to call the morons at the local office and tell them exactly what I think of their service and give them 24 hours to fix it. Long story short, I'm probably going to lose service and am looking for alternatives.

Just out of curiousity's sake, what do you cable modem line stats look like? Depending on your modem you might be able to reach it at »192.168.100.1 if I'm not mistaken.

This is pretty high and could well be related to your disconnects.

"Some times (we have several computers hooked up through a router) it will just randomly pick a computer and won't let it connect. There are no firewalls blocking and connections on any computer, it's just completely random."

This however does not sound like a TW issue.

OT BUT . TWC Midwest Ohio area does not exists. It is TWC MidOhio (former TWC Central Ohio/Columbus and MOST (except for part of Dayton) TWC WOH) and TWC Cinci, and TWC NEO. Also depending on Dayton's mood at the time there can be TWC Dayton- Formally TWC WOH

On the net now, chatting with my Son, who lives in Springfield.

He's run speedtest.net 3 times over the course of our
one hour back-n-forth... [ i seen your post and ask him...
cause he's not that far from you]

Averaging 15Mbit down / 675Kbps up

He operates a consulting business from his home and
is accessing the net 10-14 hours per day. He's saying
TW's been rock solid for the 4 years he's been in that home.
I'd imagine you'd be on the same system ?

I share your frustration. I've been a customer since it was first available in my area and for a long time it was quite reliable. But, lately it's just bad. The only reason I've stuck with Time Warner is because they give me Roadrunner standard for $30.00 a month, while Fios is now $55.00 a month. I'm retired and on a fixed income, but I may have to go with Verizon. Pretty sad.
