 | Best 2 ISPs in San Francisco... ? Our company has purchased a company based in San Fransisco. We are going to need to setup 2 links to the internet (for redundancy). (ie, cable and DSL)
What are the 2 best ISPs to use for this. (we are based on the east cost, so I have no idea what's avail. out there)
Also, we might be doing a T1 as one of the connections.
Thanks for any input. (by best I mean fasted and most reliable) |

I assume since you talked about DSL, cable, and T1, you are not looking for a DS3, OC-x etc. -- Lightning Bolt Technologies |

IF so, you can chose from a ton of providers.
Cogent(if you are on metro ring, you can get 100Mbps for cheap), Telepacific, Level 3, XO, GBLX, AT&T, Qwest..the list goes on and on. |

 | reply to jordanl17 Thanks for the replies.
We don't need 100mb, but 20mb or greater would be nice. Really, 1 good connection (probably Cable?) and 1 OK connection (probably DSL). Cogent service is probably overkill for us. We just need a good static IP cable and static IP DSL connection for downtown SF. (we like to use 2 different types of ISPs for really solid redundancy). Comcast and ATT ? |

 | reply to jordanl17 Thanks!
So, Comcast business is good for static cable. What about static DSL in downtown SF, any thoughts?
Thanks! |

Provisioning a 2nd line took a long time (ultimately it's ATT that had to make circuit available). Once the line was installed, no issues.

| reply to jordanl17 Since you mention downtown SF:
What does 'best' mean to you ?
If your definition of 'best' includes minimal delay to get the connection up and running I strongly suggest you contact the building management to find out which providers already terminate connections in that office building.
DSL and T1 service is in most cases provided from a fiber multiplexer already present in the building. This is the quickest way to get service because you are only dealing with two entities: the provisioning department of the service provider and the technicians of the (usually independent third party) company in charge of riser management (typically neither the tenant nor the ISP have access to the communications riser).
If you plan to bring entirely new service into an office tower (digging up streets) expect significant delays. -- Got some spare cpu cycles ? Join Team Helix or Team Starfire! |

| reply to jordanl17 I use Comcast business and ONLY because Sonic.net is not available where I am.
In the City it is a no brainer IM(not so)HO
Sonic.net
Gold rated here at DSLR and they earned it. I was with them for many good years. -- Mom was right.... I NEED fiber! |

 | So, it looks like Comcast for my static cable ISP, and either Sonic.net or Speakeasy for my static DSL.
Thanks!!!! |

 | Hi;
I use Comcast in the Easy Bay (Emeryville) as there are no other options, and I have to say, being concerned to move to Cable, it has been great for 1 month. I get 20mb down, and 3+ up. I am supposed to be capped at 15/3 but i have seen 10 up sometimes.
Paxio has Fibre to some of the apartment buildings here in Emeryville, super fast and low cost, but I think the City mandated some of this on some of the new complex projects. AT&T is pure dung, there are places where you can get 5+ meg down, but their infrastructure in the Bay Area is 70 years old, and they have little motivation to move it because the population density is low. Comcast is killing their decision to stay on ADSL or ADSL/2 (Uverse) here on the West Coast and Verizon is eating them alive on the East.
I would love to have access to Verizon FiOS, but the same reason AT&T does not do some massive change, is the same reason Verizon is not going to dig up the streets of SF to sell $30 broadband to a low density population, with a City " political climate" that surly would squeeze out all kinds of fees and taxes to lay those conduits.
Net-Net, try Comcast, and see if the building you are in has Metro Ethernet or Fibre, if not, get a ADSL backup.

Jon |
