| OS upgrade and game reinstall?
A friend of mine wishes to upgrade form vista to Win 7 and asked me what the best and quick procedure to move the WOW game later. I can install to a seperate partion, but is there a simple way to move the game across partitions? Or does she need to do the on line instal all over again? Would an esternal back up serve any purpose? Thanks. -- My grandkids ARE cuter than yours! |

| reply to PeeWee I had an odd thing happen today - I have copied over my wow folder several times in the past and never had a problem. Today when I started the game on my new build (which the game had run fine on) the bliz updater said it couldn't find the wow.exe file. I tried several times but it refused to update so I had to reinstall the game. BTW - should you install the game you only need to install the WotLK DVD and not all the other stuff. -- Hunting is a sport... except only one side knows it's playing - anon comedian

| said by kingdome74 :the bliz updater said it couldn't find the wow.exe file. That's probably related to the patch last night. It appears to have some issues. -- The goggles! They do nothing! - McBain |

| reply to kingdome74 I just did an upgrade from Vista to 7 (not a clean install) and did not have to reinstall WoW. If you are wiping and doing a clean install, just copy the entire WoW directory over to an external hard drive and move it back over when the install is complete, pretty sure that works. At the very least copy back up all of the patch files, that way you can re-install from the disk and then the upgrader will find the files and patch the game to current version. |

I could tell you more if I were home but prehaps someone else can elaborate. |

| IIRC, that's the patch crap. (where the downloader downloads the files to)
There might be some settings (like within the WTF folder) but I doubt it. I didn't experience any of this on my Vista install due to using 1) a custom game folder C:\Games and 2) turning UAC off. -- Come play Mafia! | My Picture Blog |

| You can bypass that. When you install the game it asks you if you want it to install to a different folder other than the default (Program Files) because it may interfer with blah blah blah. Just tell Vista, STFU I want it here and run the game in admin mode. -- Reality doesn't bite, rather our perception of reality bites. - Anthony J. D'Angelo |

| Win7 does the same thing. That's why when I went to install the patch it the updater couldn't find my wow.exe. I had copied the WoW folder over to c/programsx64/etc and the updater was looking for it in public/games/etc. I knew of no way to change the updater so I just deleted out all the files I copied, reinstalled the game, copied over my addons and WTF folders, an everything is good with all of my settings in place. Didn't lose anything but about 45 minutes. All is well. -- Hunting is a sport... except only one side knows it's playing - anon comedian
