| [WIN7] Remove XP
Hi,
I have three physical hard drives in my Win 7 computer. I installed Win7 Home Premium fine on a separate physical hard drive. Windows XP is installed on a second hard drive. The third hard drive is for data (video recording & dvd authoring)...
Win 7's disk manager will not allow me to delete the XP volume so I can remove it and replace it with a bigger drive. I tried the command line diskpart utility but it too would not allow me to delete the volume as it was in use....
Frustrated I disabled the drive in bios and Win 7 would not load saying the os is missing... Enabling the hard drive in bios at least allowed Win 7 to load...
How do I remove XP from the second hard drive so I can replace it with a bigger drive? How do I enable Win 7 to bootup after I remove the 2nd hard drive?
Thanks kindly.... |

| ???? Don't follow what you're saying. I don't need Xp or Xp mode. I want to physically remove my hard drive that has Xp on it.
I did install the upgrade version of Windows 7 which means I had to have a legitimate copy of a prior Windows on my computer in order to install Win 7... |

And I don't want to re-install... AND IF I do re-install, I'll most likely have to get on the phone with Microsoft to be able to reactivate.... |

Its part of the boot process. |

| reply to vue666 reboot with the windows 7 disk in the cd drive, then format the win 7 and xp drive during the install. then remove drive 2 later.
ive already reinstalled the upgrade version in my laptop once without going back to vista to do so. the upgrade will install over itself. |

I don't want any ties to the last version on my system. Fresh installs all the way. -- Satan is always busy. He makes bad things look good and good things look bad! Watch that Devil. |

If I re-install Windows 7, will I have to phone Microsoft to re-activate? |

join:2009-10-01 | No. Did you have to call before to activate? Now, there is a way to fix the bootmgr. Take a look at »forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread···t=142511 |

It is so simple now days, it is not funny. |

Apparently with Windows 7 Upgrade a prerequisite is to have a previous installed copy of Windows on your computer. Unlike prior versions which simply allowed you to insert the prior Windows installation media...
The fact I installed to a seperate physical hard drive was my choice. In hindsight it would have been easier to installl Win7 to the same hard drive as XP.... Except theXP hard drive was a fairly old 40gb Quantum Fireball drive... |

| Just got home from work and was feeling brave... So I followed the instructions in the TechRepublic link
»blogs.techrepublic.com.com/windo···/?p=1751
And everything went fine in the DiskPart utility..
I then typed Bootrec /fixmbr
Next I typed... Bootrec /fixboot
Which gave me an error - error element not found...
A quick google turned up a few suggestions but none worked... Another google turned this up
bootrec.exe /fixmbr x:\boot\bootsect.exe /nt60 all /force
(x: beeing the drive letter assigned to your DVD when you boot from the Win7 install disc... My drive was assigned F: )
Rebooted and everything is fine and thanks to the earlier steps in the TechRepublic article XP disk is now empty and can be used for data...
I also ran the EasyBCD utility to remove the Windows Xp option from my boot menu...
Cheers V666 |
