What are some good brand of furnace filters and where do you buy them from? I buy 3m all the time and I was thinking maybe some brands are cheaper but just as good as 3m. -- Caddy |

| For the average home user just look at the MERV rating. The higher the rating the more efficient at removing airborne particles. It can get a whole lot more complicated than that, but as I said for the average homeowner just compare price and rating. Definitely go with a good pleated type, skip the generic fiberglass. -- "On a motorcycle, you're penetrating distance right along with the machine. They seem like a bargain. More efficient and much cheaper in the long run than disposable filters. -- Greedy Old Pigs |

| reply to bent I do not like washable filters. Unless you have a few to rotate in service, they are just impractical. You have to wash/let dry. Easiest is with the garden hose, but that isn't too practical in winter months. And, you really can't get them clean in the bathtub.
I guess I view disposable filters like paint roller pan liners-the small extra costs is WORTH it. Swap 'em out in a few seconds, and move on. I guess it depends on how you value your time. |

| reply to caddyroger I used the purple 3m ones in my old furnace. Costco sells (or does here) them in 3 packs; in those packs the price per filter is only a buck or two more then the generic ones at hd. That might be the option if you like the 3m ones and have a membership. |

join:2002-02-10 | Hmm they aren't; I'm not sure if they sell them online or if they sell them all year round. I used to buy 6 at a time. At my local warehouse they're usually in the same isle as the light bulbs. |
