 Furnace air filters

What are some good brand of furnace filters and where do you buy them from? I buy 3m all the time and I was thinking maybe some brands are cheaper but just as good as 3m.

For the average home user just look at the MERV rating. The higher the rating the more efficient at removing airborne particles. It can get a whole lot more complicated than that, but as I said for the average homeowner just compare price and rating. Definitely go with a good pleated type, skip the generic fiberglass.

I use merv 11 or higher. Would other brands be just as good as 3m?

As far as filtering efficiency goes, yes, other brands with the same MERV rating will do as well as the 3M.

Does anyone use these or filters like them: »www.riteair.com/t-boair.aspx ?

They seem like a bargain. More efficient and much cheaper in the long run than disposable filters.

I just buy the filters-now house brand (accumulair). They fit perfectly and are great quality (inexpensive too).

I do not like washable filters. Unless you have a few to rotate in service, they are just impractical. You have to wash/let dry. Easiest is with the garden hose, but that isn't too practical in winter months. And, you really can't get them clean in the bathtub.

I guess I view disposable filters like paint roller pan liners-the small extra costs is WORTH it. Swap 'em out in a few seconds, and move on. I guess it depends on how you value your time.

I used the purple 3m ones in my old furnace. Costco sells (or does here) them in 3 packs; in those packs the price per filter is only a buck or two more then the generic ones at hd. That might be the option if you like the 3m ones and have a membership.

Hmm they aren't; I'm not sure if they sell them online or if they sell them all year round. I used to buy 6 at a time. At my local warehouse they're usually in the same isle as the light bulbs.

I have been using the blue 3M ones, and get a decent price at Lowes. The size I need is a bit rare and Costco does not carry our size.
