 | Recommend GPU and CPU/MOBO for Call of Duty 2? Hee hee Is said "duty". But seriously, I am thinking about upgradign my computer this xmas season.
I would like buy a GPU $150-200 that can run Modern Warefare 2 reasonably well and a cpu/mobo combo for around $200?
Any suggesttions? |

 | Tell us what size monitor you have so we know the target resolution.
Tell us what brand/model power supply you have so we can confirm its quality and capability to run the upgrades.
Also what ram do you have so we know whether it is possible to salvage that or not.
If you aren't sure about some of this because you have a name brand box tell us what brand and model of computer you have and we'll try to look up the necessary specs. |

 | reply to peggypwr1 The computer I have right is a generic that I built myself. THe PSU is a Raidmax 480 watt. I only have 2GB of RAM, obviously, I will upgrade this to!
My monitor is 19 inches not a widescreen. My current mobo is an ecs 6100-m to that effect, cpu right now is an AMD x2 low wattage model. |
|
 | reply to peggypwr1 what is your current graphics card?
so you have AMD x2, i assume an AM2 ECS 6100, i assume thats nvidia 6100 chipset? 2GB RAM, DDR2? Raidmax 480w (ewe?) -- Somnambulator - t3h 5133pw41k3r

 | reply to peggypwr1 I am having to deal with major communications problems so I may not be able to answer you quickly. If you don't hear from me for a number of days I will reply as soon as I am able.
Is this 800 ddr2 or something slower? If 800 we might be able to reuse it. If not then we'll have to scrap it.
I would be more comfortable with a power supply replacement.
As a first round of suggestions I would put forward something like an athlon II 435 x3, which will be around $90.
A 785G motherboard which will be around $100.
A 4850 graphics card would probably be the best balance of cost and performance for modern warfare 2. Maybe $110-120

I can go into more specifics as things progress.
If you don't hear from me for a while I haven't forgotten about you.

 | reply to peggypwr1 Yeah its onboard video. But 480 watts should suffice right? |

 | reply to peggypwr1 "But 480 watts should suffice right?"
A lot depends on the 12v. I'm not finding much of anything on a 480 watt raidmax model. If you can get the exact model number off the label and/or the UL number (which is an E with 6 numbers after it) I can try to hunt down the actual maker. In general though most raidmax supplies are low quality and since the supply is probably a number of years old that makes me even more leery of using it in a new build, as supplies deteriorate with age and lower quality supplies often have a relatively short life. |

 | reply to peggypwr1 Something like this has 30A 12v for $40 after rebate.

Since I cannot find reliable details on that raidmax psu if you can look on the label of your power supply and tell us all the 12v Amperage numbers this would help. If you are confused by this I can go into more detail. Then tell us yea or nay as to the idea of a new supply.
If it turns out that the 12v numbers simply won't support what I suggested then I'll modify my advice as necessary to meet your wishes. |

 | reply to peggypwr1 Ill look tomarrow morning and try to see the spec printed on the label.
As for computer cases, nothing fancy, does newegg list cases that have a media card reader built in? |

 | reply to peggypwr1 Your power supply is going to be either the 13A @ 12V or the 21A @ 12V one.
For today's standards, there both quite low in there output for 12V. I would replace it with a dual rail 500W or better supply.
For upgrades, I would look at at a video card before you replace your MB/CPU. Also, you will gain back X amount of ram back once you disable your on-board video. So you will have full use of your 2GB of ram, which is more then enough for MW.
If you do opt to replace your MB/CPU, I would do what I did, and just sell your old rig and build a complete new one.
I sold my old Q6600 rig for 500$ and built a i7 SFF system for 1200$, and my buddy who sold his system as well, built a i5 system for 800$. |

 | reply to peggypwr1 I made a mistake its a 380 watt not 480.

 | reply to peggypwr1 ok, 11A simply isn't a capable enough 12v rail to power what you are considering. There is no choice, it has to be replaced if you want to upgrade.
The 400 corsair is one of the least expensive decent quality supplies you will find that has an acceptable 12v. Don't try to go cheaper on this component. It wouldn't be a wise thing to do and might even put you back where you are right now.
You do not need to replace your case, just your power supply. The budget doesn't allow for spending on a case. I assume your case is a standard mid-tower case. It isn't something tiny that is going to pose a problem with fitting a graphics card in?
Ok, we are looking at a $400 budget. We need a power supply and a graphics card at minimum. You want a motherboard, cpu, ram in addition.
Can you confirm the speed of your ram? It is becoming more important that we try to salvage it.
I'm sure you are getting tired of answering questions and not getting answers from us. It is important to get all the details right though. Let's confirm the ram speed, the mid-tower case and we can start to narrow down options. |

 | reply to peggypwr1 Don't hesitate to post back if you want to discuss something, don't like something etc. |
|
 | reply to peggypwr1 THe brand name of the ram is Patriot, I am trying to find the speed. |
|
 | reply to peggypwr1 Check in your bios to see what it is set to. You can probably reuse your ram.
You might even be able to get by with 2GB and not buy any more.
These are my thoughts at the moment:
corsair 400w power supply $50 before rebate:

asus 785 and athlon II 435 combo $155:
4850 graphics $120:

If you want to add ram we can talk about specific ram. 2GB will run around $40, 4 double that.
If you are interested in this I'll double check things. |
|
 | reply to peggypwr1 If you really want a new case this $70 case with 380w antec, that has about 27A 12v, would be ok.
