Defending the VZW Family Plan

said by r81984:

I think a bunch of fanboys stuck on their parents Verizon family plan just jizzed their pants.
And consider the advantage of a VZW family plan (from the family POV) - unlimited calls (24/7/365) to any other VZW phone anywhere (such calls use *zero* plan minutes!) for $5 per line per month. Save your *plan* minutes for non-VZW cell or landline calls.

I happen to *like* VZW's family plan for that reason alone!

(Besides, doesn't AT&T Mobility offer a similar plan? It's well-known that Sprint, and even Nextel pre-Sprint acquisition offers/offered similar family plans (I know of two families that have pre-acquisition Nextel family plans). Basically, pot, meet kettle.)

Reality - the real reason for parents to add lines for the children (especially the teenagers) is to keep track of them (the kids, that is)! Why whack them for choosing to actually be responsible by sniping away at those plan minutes?

Lastly, adding lines is often *cheaper* than PAYG/prepaid (not to mention that there is a greater handset choice).

Example: James and Lillian Kettler are existing VZW customers. Lillian is eligible for a discounted handset this year (New Every Two), and Harry Kettler (junior in high school) wants a Storm2 for Christmas. Lillian gets a Storm2 at a discount, takes advantage of the Storm2 BOGO (Harry gets a surprise this Christmas!) and, when used for the intended purpose, the Kettlers pay a mere $60 over the next year for keeping track of Harry (who actually dares to be a responsible teenager and uses his new Storm2 responsibly).

Math breakdown:

Lillian was eligible for the discount on the Storm2 anyway; merely taking advantage of that does not disqualify her from taking advantage of the Storm2 BOGO - adding a line to the FSP is $5 per month, or $60 per year.

Responsible-teenager argument - The teenager is well-aware that the parents want to keep track of him/her; however, the teenager (like most teenagers) loves smartphones. The teen knows the 'rents are VZW customers, and that mom (or possibly dad) is eligible for New Every Two *now*. Lightbulb moment: teenager points out the Storm2 BOGO. Parent upgrades to a Storm2, while the teen gets one also, and for less than a PAYG/prepaid phone (the teen can pay the $5 extra him or herself, so the net cost to the 'rents is actually zero). Win-win.

The anti-fanboys probably jizzed in their pants thinking about the fanboys jizzing in their pants.

I would assume ALL carriers do this. Its included on my sprint plan (for no additional charge). Actually I used to be on nextel and my wife was on sprint, when they merged, we called each other at n/c with separate plans the next day.

I pointed out that practically all carriers (and certainly any carrier that pretends to be a national carrier) do this, which is why I whacked the poster that criticized VZW's Family Share Plan.

Ya, um, mobile to mobile is free with att too, so are nights and weekends, amd calls to att landline folks, plus you have roll over minutes which no other provider offers.

Adding a line is 9.99 per line on my 550 famly plan, limited to 3 lines (who would want to split 550 by 5 anyways?). My upgrade period is march 2010 because i didn't do anything to alter the 2 year contract on my line. Yea, march 2010, even though i basically created a family plan with a new number for my girlfriend, got 2 new phones, and did i mention i wasnt charged upgrade fees, activation fees, early termination fees for another number (people kept calling the 1st number because it was used by a local business) or any other fees. Oh they also credited us on our bill for each phone because of several picard style facepalm worthy mistakes they made when changing the numbers for my girlfriend.
