I was with what became Verizon for about 15 years. Started with PacTel Cellular. That changed to AirTouch. Then I think GTE went on it's acquisition spree and relabeled themselves as Verizon. I could be wrong on the progression, but the point is once it became VZ, customer service after the sale went down the tubes. The incompetence by all but the highest level technical people was astounding. And...the pricing was among the highest in the industry. For a while, I didn't mind it, since VZ had the best network going. But once they stopped acting like they wanted my business and started acting like they were entitled to it no matter what, that's when I moved to T-Mobile.
Now, when you switch carriers, you exchange one set of headaches for another as far as coverage is concerned, but TMOs customer service has been stellar, and their network is getting better by the day. This is not to mention you're not hampered by the phones you can use. TMO says if it's is GSM and runs on these frequencies, slap a SIM into it and let's go. VZ has rigid controls over what devices you must use. You have to get them from VZ. Features are crippled. Shall I go on? Oh, here's a good one. A friend had a phone with VZ. It could take pictures, but the only way to get those pictures out of the phone was to pay VZ extra for a plan that would allow the transfer. We could get a cable from the manufacturer that would do the file transfer, but VZ had the very same manufacturer disable the feature so you had to give them money to get YOUR photos out from YOUR phone. That you bought. I asked the customer service people about this. Their answer? "Did you see the direct file transfer feature listed when you signed the contract and bought the phone?" My response was no...no I didn't, but wouldn't someone who buys this phone and knows how to get a cable reasonably expect the feature to work, and are you choosing to play the game of exclusion in the small print while pushing to make a sale? This, rather than saying loud and clear that you need to do certain things to get your photos out, and here's what they are. Their answer was yes, that's how we play the game. Got it.
TMO on the other had, says hey, you can bring in a tailgate from a '63 Chevy pickup. If it has a SIM slot and runs on our GSM network, go for it. If there's a feature that requires extra capacity on our network to operate, you sign up for it. No hassle, have a nice day. And if you notice, they don't spend time and money on advertising squabbles. They just keep improving their network.
What will the future bring? Who knows? I'm staying put for the time being. And so is my friend who finally left VZ for TMO, because the antenna on the phone broke and VZ wanted 40 bucks and a week of holding onto the phone to replace it. That is just so stupid that you have to pay extra to get your pictures off your phone, wow. You know I kinda wish I ditched Verizon and went to T-Mobile when my contract expired. Verizon seems to be more expensive than the others. I definitely will avoid Cingular/Sprint/AT&T. -- The Internet is about to go down....it is actually. | |
