Simple solution for Verizon.

just put a (*) at the bottom of the AT&T map with the following...
'customers outside of 3G areas can still get voice service and slower EDGE connectivity.'

Re: Simple solution for Verizon.

Even better one... If I were Verizon I'd create another map showing all the areas where I had 3G coverage that AT&T didn't. Then I'd use that map in my ads, stating that Verizon's network is waaaaay faster than AT&T's slow 2G network all over the place.

"Want to know where your new Droid will have a data connection that will pound the iPhone's into the ground? Want to know where AT&T lets its customers down? There's a map for that!"

To all liberals: I am NOT one of your parents, so get the heck out of my wallet. It's time for you to grow up and take some personal responsibility for taking care of yourselves, which means not relying on the government to give it all to you.

Re: Simple solution for Verizon.

that's good but too nuanced for a quick tv ad. it's more effective to show service vs no service. or in this case, 3g vs no 3g.

Just got my Droid this past Sunday and let me tell you it pisses off my co-workers who have IPhones to no end that while they have no connections what so ever in our building that I have four bars and 3G ...

Everyday this week at least one of them has started to go one about how great their IPhone is and I simply hold up my Droid, point to the connection and they shut up and skulk away.

Silly kids, IPhones are colorful bricks.

Re: Simple solution for Verizon.

I also have a Droid and had to use my GF's iPhone yesterday. It felt so dated and clunky. She's actually at the Verizon store as we speak picking out a new phone.

There must be something really missing in your life to harbor such resentment over Apple and iPhones.

We don't harbor hate for Apple or their products. We just remember when they hated us. They were elitists.

And if you think the product is better, imagine this business model. We will charge twice as much for our product that comparable products, lock it down so that you can only buy things from us at thrice the price and tuck some "security" feature in.

I had an Apple IIc w/128kb of ram and a built in 5 1/4 floppy drive. I don't hate Apple, I don't like proprietary anything.

Missing from my life? Quite the opposite. It's the presence of Apple computer IN my life that is the problem.

I administer and support in excess of 450 computers and mobile devices about 15% of which are Macs, ITouches and IPhones. The 15% accounts for 85% of our support calls the vast majority of which never can be resolved because the problem is Apple does support "that" function - there is no Apple software to do that, no sir Apple doesn't allow access to those settings so we can't change it, yes mam I know you used to be able to do it that way on you PC but Apple doesn't allow you to do it that way

etc
etc
etc

Apple computer, ITunes and their shoddy one size fits all programming and DRM requirements are responsible for nearly all my job stress.

I wish with a wave of my hand I could make them all disappear.

Shouldn't have to. AT&T just needs to fess up that their 3G coverage sucks balls. This is one thing that Verizon has done right.

No way AT&T is going to win this until they get their coverage straight. There are a lot of open areas in Verizon's map where I still get data coverage. But it is at slower speeds and therefore the map is accurate and the comparison in this case IS apples to apples, no pun intended.

They already do that.

But they could avoid all this buy just highlighting the edge network in a lighter color.

And why should Verizon do AT&T's job for them? If AT&T wants to make excuses for the facts, let them buy their own ads.

Because that little 5 minute fix would save them a lot of money on lawyers.

Verizon and AT&T both have teams of lawyers that work for them. They pay them either way. This is nothing but a ploy by AT&T to try and get the ads pulled ... and it won't work.

And how is AT&T making excuses for the facts? Is AT&T lying when they say they offer EDGE outside of the 3G areas?

Now, the bigger question that everyone seems to be missing is not how much 3G coverage a company has, but the actual signal coverage the company has. I'll say from experience that when I have 1 bar of HSPDA on my phone I tend to get dropped packets (as noted in a ping test), this means that dial-up would work better than HSPDA.

Re: Simple solution for Verizon.

Not to defend AT&T... I just dropped them because their voice network here in DC is the pits... But to say that Verizon is spouting "truth" is a bit of stretch since the map on their website indicates that just because you're in a red area, that's no guarantee of coverage. I'm sure the same is true of AT&T, Sprint and the other coverage maps, but Verizon is no paragon of virtue here...
