| How many people want it? I think a large part of the problem, is the disconnect between the people who WANT 100/100 and the people who don't realize how much our lives could change if they GOT 100/100.
Right now, we are a small minority, those of us who would be very happy to get 100/100 speeds. The disconnect comes when others would ask, what do you need those speeds for?
The real issue, is no one can really make the jump, and start offering services that would NEED 100/100.
If the broadband industry, were more like the gaming industry, where new games almost FORCE platform upgrades...
This is how I see it.

And....
There is a big difference between having those types of speeds at work, vs having them at home.
If you don't know what you are missing, then I guess you are part of the crowed who has no desire for higher speeds.
If we all had 100/100 connections at home, the types of services that could be offered, are almost unlimited. Tons of different types of entertainment, like tv shows, movies, interactive games, interactive communications, the list could go on and on.
The root of the thing is this, until we HAVE the connections, we won't really KNOW what might be thought up by someone..

This is the problem right now, we are so limited with what we know we can do now, with the very limited speeds we have, that we dare not dream what could be possible if we had virtually unlimited speeds..

As someone with 1/20th of 100mpbs, I would die for such a connection as I can't get them with what I have....takes too long |

It's hard to dream about things you don't know about...
Just one example, that comes to mind, for me...
Ever watch the news? When they have an interview, and both people can see each other in real time, and have perfectly flawless interactions..
Right now, we can't even come close to that.
Now add 5 more people..

15?
Maybe you have no desire to do this, but you have to agree it would be cool if you could.

Those commercials, are marketed towards business, to cut down on having to fly all over the place to get things done.
The connections are obviously available, but not to the average home user.
In a business district, you could have gigE speeds if you had the money to get it. Heck, even an OC3 is 155mbits
Even aiming for 100/100 at home, is really slow, considering what technology is out there. We have had 100/100 LAN connections in the home for as far back as I can remember.
What this country really needs, is a not-for-profit last mile provider.
This is the kind of project, that just needs tons of money tossed at it, without worrying when it will turn a profit.
This is the kind of project, that should be compared to when we built all the high ways around the country. We didn't really need them then, but we sure do now.

Look at cell phones in Japan. They do things with them, people in the US don't even think about. I see stories about it all the time.

Just as I thought. People sitting around whining about broadband speeds really have no idea why anyone should sink enormous amounts of money into getting everyone 100 Mbps broadband. I will now go back to doing all the things that I find perfectly doable with my dreadfully slow, pathetic broadband. |

Almost everything people do today, with their entertainment, is static. The entertainment has already been produced, and is force fed to us.
Why would any of those companies, producing this static entertainment want you or me to be able to do the same thing?
What if we could do it even better? What if we could do it in real time, and have real interactivity?
I don't know how else to wake you up. If you can't see the potential then my words sure aren't going to wake you up to it.
What is your favorite tv show? Why isn't it interactive? Why don't they produce it live, and in real time?
What is your favorite kind of music? What is your favorite band? Wouldn't it be cool, if they could just put on a concert whenever they wished, and deliver it all over the world, in real time, and what if you could interact with them, and anyone else watching, in real time, video, audio, whatever..
Think about what we do today, for entertainment, and why.
Then think about how it could be different, if everyone with a computer, and a decent webcam could be all making their own entertainment for world wide consumption. Not static, but fully interactive, and in realtime..
Open your mind, and dream.

But the above doesn't work because of the insurance company and hospital relationship.
Imagine if the power company was able to raise rates however high it wants with zero oversight by the PUC. Remember the power company can use the health/building department to condemn any house without electricity as "unfit for human habitation". Do you have a choice to pay the pied piper now?
Imagine if all roads were toll roads. You can't get off your property without money unless you accept their "traffic financing" plan with 69.99% APR. |
