me1212 join:2008-11-20 Pleasant Hill, MO | ..... Why? I was on google and I typed in "what are" and now if freaked the **** out of me, it was funny but a bit unexpected. BTW "what is" will give you a laugh too.
Anyway great week we are working on a movie at school, just a group of us kids(I say kids but we are in college.).
And how would I google this? "compare and contrast the antislavery movement before 1830 with the abolitionists movement after 1830" and "Explain the forces behind the spread of slavery, the political conflicts if cause and the eventual compromises made by opposing factions. Describe some of the ideological arguments plantation owners used to justify slavery". How would I google to find that information? I need it for school and I am on my own to find it. | |

I grew up an hour from Harpers Ferry, lived nearby for a couple of years. It was one of my favorite places to visit; right along with Fort Valley and Point of Rocks.
HF would be invisible to history, if Brown hadn't beat the snot out of the town. Of course HF, in turn, returned the favor.

Something which always struck me was how the south's system of slavery created a certain amicability and tolerance between whites and blacks. They were relatively cordial and caring to each other (as long as the black wasn't "uppity," nor the slave try to escape.). They were, due to the nature of the system relatively integrated.
Northerners (generally) opposed slavery, but didn't want blacks anywhere near them. Examples:
quote: • From 1807 to 1849, Ohio required blacks entering the state to post a bond. Act of Jan. 25, 1807, ch. VIII, 1807 Ohio Gen. Assem. Laws 53, repealed by Act of Feb. 10, 1849, 1849 Ohio Laws 17. • Michigan Territory passed a similar law in 1827, though there was only one recorded attempt to enforce it. Act of Apr. 13, 1827, 1827 Mich. Rev. Laws 1-10 (1st & 2d Councils). David M. Katzman, Before the Ghetto: Black Detroit in the Nineteenth Century 7 n.6 (1973). • Indiana required a bond from 1831 until 1851, when a new constitution forbade black immigration entirely. Act of Feb. 10, 1831, 1831 Ind. Rev. Laws 375, superseded by Ind. Const. of 1851, art. XIII, § 1 (amended 1881). • Illinois went the same route by coupling the repeal of its 1829 bond provisions with a prohibition on black immigration in its 1848 constitution. Ill. Const. of 1848, art. XIV; Act of Jan. 17, 1832-33, Ill. Rev. Laws 463, amended by Act of Feb. 1, 1831, 1832-33 Ill. Rev. Laws 462, repealed by Act of Feb. 12, 1853, 1853 Ill. Laws 57. • Oregon's 1859 constitution forbade blacks to enter the state, Or. Const. of 1859, art. XVIII (repealed 1926), • and Iowa provided for a fine of two dollars a day for any black remaining in the state for more than three days. Act of Feb. 5, 1851, 1851 Iowa Laws 172. -- »www.guncite.com/journals/cd-recon.html (see footnote 150)
It's strange how the North is depicted as gallantly for equality.
BTW: That entire law journal article is excellent. It's about the narrower issue of the right to arms and slavery. Some really good history.

They were relatively cordial and caring to each other...Mark That's been my experience as well. In Washington DC, by best friend and I would throw our 10-speeds in the back of his pickup and park by the Capitol; about 1 AM.
Anacostia was notorious for drugs and high murder rate. We'd ride for an hour or two. All the guys on the street would see were these two streaks of white flying by. If we every broke down or wrecked, we'd be dead; or near enough.
Around Washington, it was a given that there were a lot of areas you did not go, if you weren't black. I've been beat for being white, so had most of my friends. That's just how it was.
Later in life, I moved into a central FL county; my half of which has to be the Whitest Place on Earth. It can be an incredibly dull place to live.
The other end of the county has a pretty healthy sized black population. One day, I found myself in a grocery store out that way.
My fight-or-flight response geared way up when I looked around and noticed I was the only white guy in the store.
What was absolutely bizarre was when I looked into the faces of the men and women around me, I suddenly realized that... NOT ONE OF THEM WANTED ME DEAD.
In fact no one seemed to give a crap about me one way or the other. It was completely surreal - totally outside my experience. It really impacted me.
One thing I've always wanted is to not care about anybody's skin color. That is, to not have it register on my radar or anyone else's.
The South is the place where that is most likely to happen. (We've some black/white racists/bigots here, but not nearly as many as there were around Washington.)
Now I know people tend to cluster and cloister and that's cool if you like ethnic diversity. It helps keep it intact.
But past that, I would give much for the luxury of never again having it matter what race someone was.

Way back in grade school when we were learning about the Civil War, we were taught that Southerners were all evil slaveowners who hated all blacks and would do anything and everything horrible to them.
We also were taught that Northerners were so kind and civilized and they would never practice the kind of racism that was widespread in the South.
But yes, what you said is 100% correct. If the South was evil and racist against blacks, then the North was just as evil and racist, but with no slavery.
To the original poster... you might also want to research the fact that at the beginning of the Civil War, a lot of people in the North would have been more than happy to cut the South loose and let it be its own country.
