RX300 join:2004-02-23 Bluff Dale, TX | Upgrade Video Card For New Monitor question I have been using a 15" LCD monitor/TV for a long time and have a 20" S-IPS monitor,1680x1050, on the way and want better video response. I use the machine for browsing, office apps and a photo editing, no games. Always a little slow to redraw and leaves a grey box on the screen when I close a box in front of a window. I want a better video card with DVI for the new monitor but I don't know what. I have a quiet desktop PC and want to keep it that way. Intel MB with a 1.2g Tualatin processor, 4X AGP, Antec SL350s power supply and a GEForce4 MX4000 64mb video card. Do I just need a video card with more memory ? |

 | You can get an AGP Geforce 6200 512MB for around $40 if you look around. I have one in my home theatre PC, that has passive cooling (no fan) so it's as silent as it gets. It plays games/video/etc @1080p with ZERO issues. Sure its not as fast as my GTX260 in my gaming rig, but it's not for gaming, and I bought it for the silence. |

RX300 join:2004-02-23 Bluff Dale, TX | I have done a little more reading since I originally asked the question. I wish I could stay with a nvidia based card but I would have to go up to a Geforce 6600 to get the digital resolution I need and I think all of those need fans. The ATI cards get the digital resolution I need starting with the Radeon 9200. Those come passive cooling. The driver situiation is what I don't like about ATI cards. When I installed the 20 inch monitor on the MX card the correct resolution was available. From what I have read getting that on an ATI card is somewhat of a challenge. Still reading. |

 | i run the silent 6200 @ 1920x1080@60hz, through a DVI-HDMI adapter. You should have NO issues running it at a lower res (1680x1050). Mine has 512MB of memory, you could prolly get one with 256MB for almost nothing. |

RX300 join:2004-02-23 Bluff Dale, TX | reply to RX300 Thanks - Got a GEForce 6200, fanless. Works great, still quiet and cool. The power supply fan speed stays low and the case stays a little higher in temp, about 2 degrees. I'm pushing air into the case weth a variable speed fan with a temp sensor by the hard drives. It stays at about 2200 to 2500 RPM. |
