Right, but you can totally ignore it if you so choose and it doesn't really screw with "your" timeline.
For example, if I @ reply you from my Twitter account, no one but you can see that, unless you choose to @reply to my @reply and even then, your followers can only see your @reply, not the original comment.
It's a great platform for companies to distribute critical information and for self-centered celebrities to make sure they stay at the center of attention. (ha)
