What happens if I turn UPnP off?

What happens if I turn UPnP off?

Like with things like an xbox and others that use UPnP? When they connect UPnP are there issues? Are there any benfits to turning it off?
Example, if you port forwarded everything is there a need for UPnP?
If you didn't port forward how will it perform on the router, will things still work?

UPnP allows applications and hardware that support UPnP to automatically tell the router what ports to temporarily open.

This saves on port forwarding, however if a malicous program on the computer supports UPnP, will most likely abuse it.

I have not had a issues with such programs and UPnP so I keep it enabled for simplicity sake.

As for consoles...there's an option called Gaming Mode on certain routers.

What is Gaming Mode on my D-Link router?
Gaming Mode allows a form of pass-through for certain Internet games. If you are using XBOX, Playstation2, or a PC and have problems with your Internet games, make sure you are using the latest version of the firmware and that Gaming Mode is enabled.

If you are not using an application that requires this type of pass-through, it is recommended that you disable Gaming Mode. Gaming Mode basically changes the way the gateway inspects the packets destined for your LAN and should not be used unless necessary.
If you don't have a Gaming Mode option, don't worry. It's either enabled or not necessary on newer routers.

Well, I just wanted to test turning it off, I use an xbox 360, ps3 and pc's. My NAT on my xbox is still open, and my NAT type is type 2 on my ps3, so is there a need to use it?

Turn it off.
If you have any issues, turn it back on.

I don't use port forwarding and my UPnP is disabled. I also have a 360 and a PS3 connected to the router. I haven't noticed any issues. The closest thing I have to an "issue" is not being able to hear some people when they talk via their headset. I personally count this as a blessing rather than an issue. I can't possibly think of one thing they could say that I want to hear.

I'm using a Linksys BEFSR41 if it matters. I have no problems connecting to my friends and hearing them. Everything works just fine except not being able to hear some 12 year old cussing everyone out. *yawn*

I've disabled UPnP and everything is working fine, I wonder why my router has UPnP if everything works out of the box anyway.
