hdmi computer monitor with hd box?

Can I hook up a HDMI computer monitor to my HD receiver box I use with my digital HD programming from Mediacom? I have a HD TV connected to the new style HD box and it works great. In my daughters room we have an old 20" tv with standard digital receiver and it has a poor picture due to the old tv. I was on my computer and thought hey this 22" widescreen HD display with HDMI - DVI - VGA inputs might plug into the HD receiver box from Mediacom in my daughters room and solve her poor quality viewing. I know I can get these HD monitors for $150 new vs. $300 for the HDTV monitors.
Would this work since the HD receiver box is descrambling and decoding the signal to the monitor or do I still need the tuner on the monitor to make it work?
thanks

If the monitor has a native resolution of 1280x720, or 1920x1080, and if you are feeding it an HD signal at that resolution, the answer is "probably". You wouldn't need a separate tuner, other than the cable box.

But unlike a TV there won't be an upconversion of any kind going on, so it's going to display the input format. And if that doesn't match it's native resolution, it will likely look like crap.

Chances are the HD box can do the upconversion. I ran an HDMI cable from our cable box to my monitor too and it looks beautiful (Native is 1920x1200 so there are slight black bars on the screen). You won't need a tuner but keep in mind the HD box will likely only output to one device at a time. If I have the HDMI cable plugged in, our main TV, which is connected through component, will not get a signal. I literally have to unplug the HDMI from the monitor when I'm done with it.

This can vary a lot for box to box -- all of the Vz FiOS set-top boxes, for example, allow for all the outputs to be enable at the same time. I have no problems with one box (QIP 6200) having both HDMI and component working at the same time.

Ahh I didn't realize a lot of boxes would let you do that. I guess the OP can ask in the appropriate cable forum if it's supported. Either way, it was something I didn't expect when I first hooked it up.

Oh, yeah, I would have been horribly annoyed -- we have two 6200s here, both with multiple outputs in use
