Re: Comcast On Screen Guide - Community Feature Wishlist

One more thing I'd like to see... More descriptive error messages.

Instead of "One Moment Please - Your channel should be available shortly", that should be broken down to:

Poor or intermittent signal - (Signal issue)

Cannot find channel data - (channel map issue - needs hit)

Then maybe if its the Poor or intermittent signal, if you push info it could pull the in band tuner stats from the diagnostics page. SNR, AGC, Correctable/Uncorrectable errors, Frequency, QAM level, etc...

And one more thing... Ability to turn closed caption on or off without going into the diagnostics.

Again, with any fancy interface, be aware of the limitations of the hardware. Comcast prefers to use a common interface across all boxes. I'd guess only the latest DCX and maybe DCH could handle that. The DCT's would be overwhelmed or not have enough memory (my DCT-6412 only has 128M RAM.)

True, but I would be willing to pay a few dollars more for the better equipment with more 'luxurious' user interface.

Maybe... Standard DVR service $15.95
Deluxe DVR service with new interface and features $19.95

You need to take a course in fiscal responsibility.

Or you need to take a course in not being cheap.

Some people are willing to pay a premium for a premium experience.

There are many misguided people, no doubt.

But to expect Comcast to invest money in providing these "premium experiences" exhibits a total lack of understanding of how the industry works.

So my car has heated leather seats, a power sunroof, power everything. Are you saying I should of gone with manual windows, no sunroof, cloth non heated seats?

I bought what I did because that's what I wanted. Companies produce different tiers of products to fit different peoples wants and needs.

So you might not go out and buy a PC Core i7 Extreme with 12GB RAM, SLI Video cards... maybe a regular Core2Duo and 2GB RAM is all you need. That's fine too. To each his own.

If I go out to a restaurant and feel like eating a delmontico steak one day, then maybe next time a hamburger, so be it. The worlds about choice.

This is insane, and most of those features are ridiculous. Many of them technologically impossible (using tuners in other devices to record to your dvr? Seriously?).
If that's "insane", it's only because I can't imagine anyone thinking the Comcast/Motorola DVR user experience is one you'd subject yourself to willingly and feed programs when you don't have to. As for feeding one tuner's output to another recording device, is that what you think is "insane"? Because it's pretty much what anyone who has Comcast in the home, and buys off-the-shelf DVR from a 3rd party, is forced to do. (and if not today, then real soon now, once everything gets re-encrypted in all markets).

I pay $9/ month for a slave STB that does nothing but stay powered on 24/7 and feed content to my off-the-shelf DVR for scheduled recordings. I'd say that's a huge step back from the RCA VHS VCR I bought in 1985 - considering that neither VHS nor Comcast DVR allows me to edit anything.

Comcast DVR is what it is, and it has some nice features, but for actual editing/recording/cropping/bookmarking (like when you want to save/see 5 minutes of a 3-hour awards show) it's a lesser beast than the $227 Magnavox now available at walmart.com.

Anyone willing to pay $19.95 a month to Comcast for DVR service, as someone up in the thread hinted they might, seriously needs to consider rolling their own: finding an off-the-shelf recording solution with an IR blaster, and biting the bullet and paying Comcast the monthly fee for a slave box.

(Or simply become proficient in unsavory internet activities. It's just easier.)

As for myself, my bill tops $100/mo for 1 HD/DVR box, DVR service, 1 SD slave box, no premium channels, and one of the middling "tiers".

And in 2009, here's what I think I should be getting for $100/month, tech-wise:

* DVR tech which can edit, crop, bookmark and rename recordings.
* an EPG (which Comcast bills for) without ads.
* Cable service which doesn't require an always-on, hot-to-the-touch box for every screen/device in the house.

Speaking in more general terms, and including things which might be controversial to some, but IMHO should definitely be doable for $100/month, despite the "morality" of it:

* burning DVDs.
* a la carte service selection.

I realize that these last two are controlled by other factors than raw pricing, but still - point is that they should be on the table for $100/month.

Maybe you would pay $4.00 more a month for a new improved on-screen guide, but I don't think "most" would, that has to factor in to the equation of development costs and return on investment.

Exactly.

This is also why the highest selling cars are the ones under $20k, that have cloth, heatless seats.

He just doesn't get the concept that a service shouldn't attempt to provide for only the top 5% of its customer base.

Well the Tivo guide in certain, rare New England communities is $2.99 a month extra, IIRC. And I've read a few posts online that all state it's 'worth it'.

Make a premium guide for a few dollars more, or hell, just make a premium guide and make it the standard across DVR service (DVR's have better specs anyway).

A much better guide is coming, but as to what features are in it and when it comes out is still up in the air.

I want one thing only right now...a way to lock Native mode active on the DCX-3400, maybe a menu option to ignore EDID data and just output the formats I select.

I have DCX-3400 -> Denon AVR-1610 -> Vizio VF550M.

Whenever I even turn the TV off and on, regardless of whether I turn the reciever and/or DCX off and on, the DCX resets to 720p output.

Connected directly to the TV everything is fine.

Both TV and Reciever handle 480i&p, 720p, 1080i, and 1080p fine from Sony Blu Ray player.

IMO, a VERY counter-intuative interface. Perhaps Comcast needs to be inspired, but hopefully when they are it won't be by this!

grcmptrnrd See Profile good call...

RalphKramden See Profile May not be 100% best intuitive, but graphics, attention grabbing, transitions and widescreen UI elements would be welcome in 2010 and beyond.

I think you had a typo in your URL, try this »www.comcast.net/newguide/

....and that looks to be the newest version of I-Guide, A28, for Motorola markets. I have that guide now just outside of Philadelphia.
