| | Why pay another $30.00 I mean, if you are paying $30.00 for 5GB of data, why in the world would you pay another $30.00 to use the EXACT SAME DATA via your PC vs your phone? It boggles the mind that verizon thinks that's there's a difference between data that goes to a phone vs data that goes to a PC? I would be VERY interested to see HOW verizon can determine if you are 'tethering' your phone, given the fact that hackers will ALWAYS be able to outsmart them. -- The happiest countries are the most secular. | | Re: Why pay another $30.00 They do it because they want you to pay an extra $30 if you are utilizing data faster and in larger amounts, which 99% of the time, you will if you are using a PC.
It's definitely not fair, but that is the reason for the price hike.

| | | Re: Why pay another $30.00 thats fine, but at least give another 5gb with the additional $30 your paying. | |
|
| | | | Re: Why pay another $30.00 That would be a great idea, and would probably sway more people into the ridiculous pricing. | |

| Re: Why pay another $30.00 With the blackberry on verizon when you enable tethering, it starts a whole new counter for data usage. with a 5 gb cap that's completely separate from the phones base usage.
does anyone have any reason to believe that this would not be the same with the droid??
Also - The $30 for data / $30 for tethering is how they've worked blackberries for personal use for at least a year.

| Re: Why pay another $30.00 Hmmmmm... I thought that on my 'my verizon' account a separate counter showed up for the month of traveling i did over the summer with my blackberry that i had tethering enabled for.
I could be mistaken, it was several months ago.
But I would agree that charging an extra $30 and not counting it separately or raising the cap would be quite a ripoff.

That is a possibility, I've just never seen it for our business phones. They do some things differently for Blackberry devices, so they might offer a different counter. -- trafficcloak.com - pptp/sstp vpn services

| Re: Why pay another $30.00 I found an old bill that breaks out the account usage into regular blackberry data which is measured in KB but "unlimited" and Broadband connect data (for the two days of the month I was subscribed) which is measured in MB, and has a limit.
though I bet this is just because my blackberry usage is "unlimited" and they want another counter there to keep tabs on the 5gb of tethering.

Ah ha. Now I know what you're seeing. I'm not sure if that is still the case, but the email plans did used to be unlimited but aren't anymore. They still break them out separately, but they are all under the same 5GB of usage. Our phones break them out separately too, but both are subject to the same (not individual) 5GB limit. It's confusing and I'd wager a guess they want it to be that way. -- trafficcloak.com - pptp/sstp vpn services

| | | | | | | | | Re: Why pay another $30.00 I confirmed in the separate listings for each type of usage at www.verizonwireless.com, and with reps at the b&m store.
You can check under "My Current Usage" for Data, which shows both "Domestic Data Used" in Kilobytes (with an unlimited cap... I need to inquire about that.) and "Domestic Mobile Broadband Connect Data Used (which DOES have a 5 GB cap).

++++++++++++++++++++++++ I confirm it 5 GB for the BB and 5 GB for the tether. I managed 40 blackberries and a BES and 25 VZ Access cards.

It's definitely not fair, but that is the reason for the price hike. I agree. If you look at the average amount of 3G data usage for smartphone it's ridiculously low. My iPhone peak (3G) usage was about 500MB one month. Other than that, it hovered around 100MB which was pretty much all Exchange push email. They know if they allow tethering, people will really use that 5GB.
For me personally, there are times when I'd much rather tether and work from my laptop than try and accomplish a task via a smartphone screen/keyboard. -- trafficcloak.com - pptp/sstp vpn services

| | | | Re: Why pay another $30.00 Cell phone data plans do not have a 5GB cap on Verizon. Now if you tether then the cap will kick in. If a person had the $44.99 unlimited plan tethering will be $15 unless they have changed that. In the end they are aiming to get you to the Mobile Broadband plan of $59.99 with a 5GB cap. | |

Tethering should be included at no charge if the 5GB cap is there and enforced. If you need more than 5GB/mo, then a plan should be available to add more GBs at additional cost. tethering should be irrelevant in the age of smartphones that are computers anyway. -- My BLOG .. ..
