Ram Drive Suggestions?

Look spendy! I am looking for smaller space, but faster accesses and longer life than a SSD.

I have one and be prepared to only have up to 12 GB 'cause 4gig stix are hard to find and are expensive so you get 6 slots times 2 gig stix.

I wanted to use it as an os drv but got it after i moved from xp. Usually use it as a vmem drv or as a scratchpad if say i'm slipstreaming. I also have my SETI data stored on there hoping for a ppd increase. have 2x2GB+2x512mb in there, for a total of @4.45 GB after the 1/9capacity taken for ECC functions. If you get the right memory, you can disable that to get full capacity. I also have used it as a Readyboost drv (in Vista it needed to be formatted fat 32 for that, not so win7) but as i do not do anything seriously intense i cannot indicate the affect on my system's speed or responsiveness. Well, 'cept for the benefit of having an additional drive.

There used to software on old macs to take the ram and turn it into a ram drive.

How can you do this with windows? I have 4 GB of Ram I could take one out I would imagine and make it into a ram drive since 32 bit cant access all of it anyway.

umm. you dont actually take it out to use software ramdisks.
and i've seen software that would use any ram over the 3.2-3.5 32bit limit and address it for ramdrive usage. don't remember the name but yeah stuff like that is available

I didnt say anythign about taking old memory out. I think you added that.

I said the software took the ram and turned it into a Ram drive.

My Mac IIsi was limited to 17 MB of ram though it came with 3

Well, I just took a look at server memory at newegg -- 4 Gig modules start around $130 while 2 Gig sticks start around $52. (a while ago I bought some 2 Gig sticks for $28, but later they were down to $25)

I was actually thinking about getting an acard and fill up with 2 Gig sticks so I could use it as a boot drive to complement my i-RAM I use as swap/temp, but that looks highly unlikely with over $50 memory.

Pardon my french, but god damn, what happened to your Maxtor drive around the 80-90% test duration? Dude, not good.

I hope something else on your PC was eating up the disk, otherwise your drive has a problem. SMART stats might help me determine what.

Yeah, what is that? Could it be an HD circuit board caused issue?

Can't find my other pic so I found all the info I acquired online. Hope this helps.

Edit to add: To Koitsu and Signmeuptoo
I didn't test under a blank slate, you can see in the system tray that i have my p2p software going. If that was goin', I probably had other progs accessing my drive then, too.

Well sum1 else was asking about my baby so I did a new screenie. One caveat: my 9010b was not at normal operating conditions as I had removed all ram, memtested (any1 familiar with my old topic regarding chkdsk on a ram-based ssd will know the catalyst for that action), then placed my pair of 512MB stix in (the pair of 2gigers went into my motherboard so I could have 8 gigs o' sys' ram, for a while.).
One more footnote, I nearly forgot: I had my boinc seti data on the drive, as well as my page file and Readyboost cache. Boinc was closed down, but it was still taking space. And of course the page file/Readyboost would be active. So take the benchmark of the 9010b as being moderately conservative, and probably capable of a bit more.
