 | Doubting My Speeds Hello, Just a quick opinion on my internet connection. I currently have the $30.00 At&T DSL package which states it has... 3.0Mb/s Download 512Kb/s Upload
I've checked my speed from Speedtest.net and It give me the following results. 2.35 MB/s Download 0.38 MB/s Upload
Now when I try and download anything (from a torrent to an itunes store file) I only get around 300 Kb/s MAX but usually it's around 150 Kb/s. Is this normal? I know there is supposed to be some degree of lost speed but form 2.35MB to 300/kb? This directly from the modem as well, if it's running through the router speeds drop about 20kb or so. Thanks for all your help, -austin |

| It would have been better to post this in one of the other AT&T forums (the one for your region), since the DSL users are mostly there.
You would normally expect around 2.5 Mb/s in a speed test. There's approx 15% overhead in dsl. So the speedtest.net result was a bit low, but not bad.
For the others, there might be some confusion between bits per second, and bytes per second. A rate of 300 kbytes per second is about right. Additionally, your speed is also affected by the capacity of the site you are visiting. -- AT&T Uverse; Zyxel NBG334W router (behind the 2wire gateway); openSuSE 11.0; firefox 3.0.15 |

| reply to austin herma Your speed test numbers look good (down) and so-so (up).
Your torrent download at 300 KB/s (most BT clients measure in KiloBytes, or KB) is very close to the theoretical maximum of 319 KB/s. I've seen 315 Kb/s on occasion; but the "occasion" requires the congruence of a number of favorable factors. I usually see between 150 KB/s and 250 KB/s on torrents. -- Norman ~Oh Lord, why have you come ~To Konnyu, with the Lion and the Drum |
