It's just Rogers own version of Hulu for Canada although it may only be for Rogers customers from what I heard.

Like mlerner said, its a Canadian version of Hulu.

Rumour has it that it would be a subscription based service that may only be accessible to Rogers customers or may be accessible to anyone with internet in Canada.

I would expect that the service would be available to anyone considering that it would be a subscription based service. It would help Rogers generate more revenue.

More details on the portal, known as "Rogers On Demand Online":

- Beta will launch publicly on the 30th
- Can authenticate as long as you have one of any of the Rogers services
- If you have cable services already, it will give you access to more content based on your TV packages
- You can choose high quality (500kbps) or higher def (1Mbps)
- OTA and deep archive content / movies will be available to all
- Multiple simultaneous account access at home or on the road anywhere in Canada

Also this is WEB BASED! No client side DRM.

I've heard someone mention it, not sure if Rogers disclosed it.

They're being secretive

Yeah, unless this service does not count against your cap, it's totally useless. With usenet and torrents, every TV show is already available for download.

You're still using caps with usenet so no difference. I don't tend to watch my usage anyhow, Rogers doesn't complain when I go over.

The site will be ad-supported, with banner ads and pre-rolls and, in some cases, ads in between segments of shows, just as you'd see through the regular cable channel (excuse the pun).

and the ability to fast forward (not through the ads, though), rewind, and pause

who said there was no DRM ?

Ads aren't DRM.

The point is that it is a form of digital rights because you will not be able to download it, archive it or view it on another open device. You will only be permitted upon authentication to stream it and will include ad laced management without the ability to FF on whatever the provider deems fit.

More like DVE - Digital Vieware Enforcement. Be prepared to view Rogers plugs galore. It's just another form of DRM that will be best suited for the Internet Challenged.

I guess the solution to these drawbacks is easy. Don't watch it.
