Servers

Are these classified as servers from an ISPs TOS? Don't other cell users get to make calls on your broadband connection?

That depends on the carrier. AT&T has advertised that the user has to specifically program the mobile numbers of those allowed to use their Femto.

All others will see the Femto and may try to connect to it, but since their number won't be programmed they won't be able to connect.

ATT fibbed. They allow up to 3 connections. Your numbers will have priority but you won't be able to lock it out from everyone else

ATT Business sales rep told me this when I told him I want 50 of them for my offices. That and the GPS location annoyance (the places I cannot get cell coverage GPS doesn't work either [warehouse])

Re: Servers

I happen to know for a fact that you are wrong. The number of concurrent voice/data sessions is limited, but the you can have up to 10 phone numbers on the authorized user's list.

Is GPS a requirement for the cell to work? Seems like a drawback. I would think that many people that would buy these may not have the ability to get GPS signals either Warehouse basement etc....

Re: Servers

Verizon and ATT both swore the unit needed GPS. Which sucks since it would be nice to take this to another country.

They claim its an FCC rule but the FCC only has authority in the USA right?

And to the ATT person that said you can program 10 numbers - thats true. Read the fine print. There is NO way to lock people roaming to your Femto. I don't like people in the parking lot of the kiddie school using my Femto so I sent it back.

Actually there is a way to lock people off the AT&T Femto. Once again, you have no idea what you're talking about.

Re: Servers

Once again, you did not read my information.

I did in fact use these Femto's six weeks ago. Your Femto's GUI will let you set 10 numbers only. You may even think that prevents people from connecting. You'd be wrong. Call your ATT rep. Mine swears up and down the FCC forced all the vendors into allowing people to roam on your Femto.

I've seen unauthorized numbers on my Femto. Instead of acting childish and claiming I'm clueless you should have real proof that what you claim is correct. I already know what I have seen.

Are you telling me you had an AT&T 3G MicroCell in Cortland New York?

Re: Servers

I had five of them. And I locked them to only three of my ATT numbers.

Five kids skating in the road out front got coverage on them. If you know Marathon at all you know the ATT coverage is Edge, and crappy edge at that. I yanked all the Femtos and the kids all starting asking each other if they lost signal.

First my sales dink told me I could only have 3 users per Femto (which was wrong as i saw 4 users each on the 2 on that end of building). Then they told me the Femto would give 3G (if they did, the ones we were provided only offered Edge).

We sent them back. The annoying thing is the Iphones and other 3G phones will send voice traffic over 3G if they can. So, the Femto gave us slightly better Edge coverage, no better data coverage, and let the kids in the parking lot use my Frontier DSL line.

I have little use for ATT and I have little use for Iphones. Even if the Femto worked as advertised and was 3G and locked non employees out the coverage indoors with them is spotty and range is very short.

Now, you may have better results. Given my experience that is not saying a whole lot. I shipped my Femtos back.

I can guarantee you didn't have an AT&T 3G MicroCell device.

First of all, the AT&T 3G MicroCell is only being trialed in Atlanta, GA; San Diego, CA; Columbia, SC; Raleigh and Charlotte NC; and Seattle and Tacoma, WA.

Even if you actually did get one in NY, the location verification measures would've disallowed the 3G radio from turning on.

Secondly, the AT&T 3G MicroCell only radiates a 3G signal. There is no 2G radio in the device.

Thirdly, after verifying with my sources, the AT&T 3G MicroCell operates with a whitelist. If a phone number is not on the whitelist, the 3G MicroCell will not allow the phone to attach. Other phones will request to attach, but will be denied if not on the whitelist.

I can't post proof of something that the FCC didn't mandate. Please provide a link to some documentation that the FCC required carriers to open Femto devices to all phones.

Did it look like this? »www.wireless.att.com/learn/why/3gmicrocell/

Re: Servers

No it didn't look like that. The one they send me was far uglier and in worse shape (I was not the original owner of such a device)

So there you are. The 3G Femto would be what I need. And I would agree you're not an idgit either so I would agree that it would work the way you wanted it it.

We tried the VZ femtos too and they suck even worse. We have EVDO here and the Femto spits out 1X only

The FCC comment was not mine -I was mentioning the ATT guy looked off into La-La land and mumbled FCC regulations. I don't really buy the GPS unit being an FCC thing since the FCC cannot regulate outside the USA ?

Re: Servers

The GPS solves lots of problems for the carrier. First of which is accurate location reporting for E911. I don't have the documentation, but I believe the FCC did mandate the carriers have a solid method for determining location for E911 compliance.
