Re: In one sentence.

Your statistics are useless and mean nothing in this context. If you want to convince me with statistics you better bring your A game and compare apples to apples or at least try to make some baseline definitions and assumptions.

Here's an analogy:

Last month 1342 "eaters" consumed a total of 120,780,000 calories.
The average "eaters" consumed 90,000 calories.

"eaters" below average: 1019
"eaters" above average: 322

Therefore there are 322 fat ass pigs who eat too much and 1019 dieters.

I didn't quite get his numbers either. All I got from them was out of their 1342 users, the average usage was 3.8GB a month on an estimated $39,000/month ($30 per customer) of revenue.

That seems like a cash cow to me.

It is ok with this crowd for the ISP to raise the price on everyone so the few can use as much as they want.
There are set costs whether you use the service or not.
There are costs for peak demand times if you don't have reserves everybody on that node has problems. People complained and still do in some areas about the cable companies service slowing to a crawl in the evening. Some of cost of your power bill is for the plants that sit idle except for that really peak cold or hot period each year and day.
If it was so cheap and profitable to build a last mile network then there would be more competition and more and more rural areas would be served by at least 3meg service by the big boys.

Your power plant analogy is not relevant to the issue. A power plant is needed to supply power when needed (and when used the power is billed to the user). In the case of the Internet, the bandwidth between the user and the Head End is a fixed quantity. When the users on the node try to use more than that amount in aggregate, each sees their speeds grind to a crawl. The same with the link between the Head End and the Peering Points on the Internet. The FIXED Cost of your connection includes the cost of your part of the "Last Mile" link to the Head End as well as the Head End's link to the Internet. This cost is independent of how much or little you use of your allocated bandwidth (ie: It is the cost of BEING ABLE to use the bandwidth). Unlike the case of Power, if there is not enough capacity, the speeds just get capped at what is available and every ACTIVE user's allocation gets lowered.
