[Help] Nissan Techs, question.

Having been an "A" Tech with ford and on used cars, domestic and foreign I understand the basic reasons a "Service/check Engine" light comes on.
My question is, is there any common reasons that is known to the 2005 Altima 2.5L before I go borrow a computer to test codes?

Also, are there any procedures to check the code causing the light to come on that I can do without equipment like the Cadillacs had....press heat and fan high same time (hypothetical example, don't remember exact buttons) to get codes?

I have 113thousand miles on the car and its all highway.
Car gets serviced every 3-5 thousand miles.
Never had a tune up.
battery connections have to be cleaned often due to build up.
Battery is original.
Has been in the dealer ship this past recall for a cpu reprogram.
The only other recall was an a-frame replacement, no others.

Problem is, the "service engine" light just appeared and now, the car takes 5-10 seconds to start rather than an instant start. I'd guess tune up but never had a car tell me it needed one through service engine lights before. The longer start causes the auto-start feature to not work and repeatedly try to start the car every 15seconds or so.

The longer start time at same time of service engine light tells me a sensor or something, but, having been out of the business for 15years, I am behind on what is sensored (a new word I just invented ) these days.
Is the alternator, battery, starter sensored to the service engine light on this particular car model and year?

Also, having been laid off for a few months and the wife taking on second job and school money is extremely tight and I cannot afford a dealer visit. I'd like to at least diagnose the problem myself. I do know where to start and what tools to borrow from my 3 mechanic neighbors across the street.
All my tools, some 200 thousand dollars worth including specialty tools, were stolen 15yrs ago, the company insurance did not cover it and my personal insurance was not updated to cover half of what I had,(my fault) Lesson learned the hard way!

So with self diagnosis and maybe self repair to keep costs down, this is why I am asking for any common issues in relation to my problem the car is having.
Does Nissan offer any tech reports like ford did/does, showing all recall, factory screw-ups, mistakes, original problems and if so, would it be on-line or just to Nissan employees like ford's tech newsletter was?

I am sure I missed something, for now, I hope the way I explained, did not confuse you as do my other "non-legible" posts/replies.

Thank you!

Just noticed a tab on main "automotive forum" page called "Automotive Social", would this be a general chat forum for just auto enthusiasts and the main Automotive" forum for questions, help, repair, news, industry related, etc???

Thanks

Yep, you got it.

Problems and technical discussions go here. My car is better than your car goes in Auto Social. (OK, we get a little deeper than that, but you get the drift.)

It could be a host of problems..with it being what sounds like a electrical problem.

Try having the battery tested at Auto Zone or Advance Auto, or you can unplug the battery and if the car still runs you will know that the alternator is good.

If those 2 turn out to be in good working order, you probably have a more serious problem, maybe something draining the battery or something to do with the starter.

Extended cranking times usually mean a plugged fuel filter...takes a few more seconds for the fuel to get up to correct pressure.

If he spark plugs haven't been changed in 113k miles....shame on you.

Throwing a code .....hmm ?!?
Ya think with original fuel filter and wornout plugs it might be seeing overly high voltages due to the inefficient fuel and fire issues ?
Food for thought ...

Ford and Nissan are the same.
Pistons, crankshafts, wheels and brakes.
The ECMs are essentially the same, OBD2.
Peugeot and Lada are the same as the Ford and Nissan....
I might seem indifferent, but I wouldn't consider myself a mechanic if I couldn't fix such a simple problem (I've never been a tech, that's a front office description of a mechanic that is limited in capacity...PC and all that).

All you really need is a DVOM to test an O2 output.
Well, that and some creativity.

Agreed, shame on me...but, I have always asked to check and see if a tune up was needed since 45,000 miles, asking to pull a plug and they always said no. Even the dealer said it was not needed at 80,000 when cpu re-programm recall was done.

I understand it could be a host of problems and my first thought was fuel injector....but, no driving problems, laggs, stutters, stalls etc.

Alternator maybe? Yes, could be both battery and alternator, reason being, I just noticed upon cranking another light appears... "Alt Check"...does this mean alternator and is this normal at cranking?

Thanks all.
Neighbor will be home later, I will check some other things and he is bringing home his scanner/handheld pc...otc I think.

A tool to read the codes is always a better resource to start with vs guessing.

Hmmm, not finished yet but looks like a crank sensor.

I will report back with the fix.

Thanks

No disrespect was intended, it is just smart to read the sensor data available before troubleshooting the problem .

Well, I was correct....it was the crankshaft sensor. Also needed a cam sensor.
Both are around 25-45 bucks.
I paid 101 dollars for the full diagnostics and purchased the parts.
I will be replacing the two sensors tomorrow.

The tech said it is a common problem with the 2.5 engine from nissan.

There was even recalls for 2002,2003,2004,2006 but not 2005...I find this hard to believe and will investigate further.

Thanks Guys.
