Hilarious

I think it is hilarious how some bubble head at Time Warner who obviously knew nothing about the internet (is it like a fishing net or a hair net oooh the internet) bought AOL at it's absolute peak in price. Why would a consumer continue to pay 25 bucks for dialup as broadband was being rolled out left and right in every major metro at not much more in price and now all over the place. It did not take a genius to see that cable would win based on $ to performance.

Re: Hilarious

I think AOL purchased Time Warner if my memory serves me correctly.

The shareholders of AOL owned 55% of the new company, Time Warner shareholders owned only 45%, meaning that the smaller AOL had in fact bought out the bigger Time Warner.

AOL did by Time Warner. As I worked for a division of TW at the time. Things went downhill very quickly after that. But they did give us free aol for a few years.

Your memory is indeed correctly. AOL bought time warner and when AOL started sinking Time Warner bought themselves back and slowly start shifting away. At the time it was major news since it was a tiny upstart company that was only around ten years old buying an industry giant.

Still alot of people in rural america that do not have highspeed dsl or cable. So companies like AOL,earthlink, netzero and a few homegrown solutions still exist for these people. heck even I myself have 2 dialup providers for backup and plan on keeping them.

Unless they are free that sounds like an awful waste of money.

Have you actually used either in the last 3 years?

People make fun of AOL, but when you switched from Prodigy to AOL, you thought you were in heaven. It was "something" to have AOL back in its heyday whatever you want to say about what in evolved in to.

Because broadband was in the $40s or $50s per month, and most websites were still dialup designed.
