gugarciPremium join:2004-02-25 Bergen Co | Need a new Graphic Card for my Dimension 8300 My Graphic card on my 5 year old Dimension 8300 finally died. Need a new card ASAP otherwise I have no use of my home computer. I'm pretty sure I have an AGP ATI 9800 Pro.
I need to buy something I can install this weekend. I was thinking of this card. »www.officedepot.com/a/products/4···550-AGP/
Although I'm not familiar with Diamond Multi Media but I can get this card at Staples and Office Depot. We don't do any gaming. But my kids do play on line games on the PC. I need something that works as well or better.
Thanks. -- A bad picture is better than no picture at all, and I would rather have a picture with some noise and details, than an picture with no noise and no details. |

What's worrying me now is will my power supply be able to run one of these newer cards??? -- A bad picture is better than no picture at all, and I would rather have a picture with some noise and details, than an picture with no noise and no details. |

 | reply to gugarci You're kind of stuck because you aren't going to find much in the way of agp cards at a local store. Not that there are many choices online either. Agp is essentially dead.
The 6200 should be safe from a power draw standpoint. If you have a 9800pro it will, if anything, be a step down, but I don't think you have much choice.
What games are your kids into? None of your options may be adequate for this. |

 | reply to gugarci Don't buy a radeon 9550, especially for $80. That's robbery. |

I edit a large number of Raw Files using Lightroom. My kids mainly play some flash games on lines.
Also I need to get my PC working if the Radeon 9550 will work better I have no choice. Will the 9550 work better???

1 edit | Just thought I would post something here. I got a ATI Radeon 9200 128MB AGP video card. Just laying around in a box collecting dust.
If this is something you got a use for. Its yours for 'free' if your willing to pay for the shipping. My self I no longer have mobo's with AGP slots in them. So I got no use for the video card anymore. PM me if you want it or not.
If you don't I can understand why. I plan on looking through all my older hardware. See what I don't have a use for anymore. |

2 edits | I can understand your reasons. You could try calling a few local computer shops. See if they got some AGP cards laying around. That they are planning on throwing away. Could be worth a shot if you ask me. That way you don't have to buy one.
My new PCIe video card should be here on monday. I ordered a Radeon HD 4670 1GB. Got a really nice deal on it I think. Could not really pass it up. |

No the 9550 will not work better. Since the games are just some flash games I would get the cheapest 6200 you can find. That should be adequate.
2d work like Photo work doesn't need much graphics power so you should be ok. I work with raw nikon files on integrated graphics that are near, or even below, the 6200. It's no problem. |

gugarciPremium join:2004-02-25 Bergen Co | reply to gugarci Thanks guys I'm using my work laptop at home for the time being. I can get by but my wife needs the desktop a lot more than me.
Went to Best Buy and of course they don't carry the 6200 in stores. Bought the at 9550 at Staples just in case. Have not installed yet.
Tomorrow I will open up the PC and clean it thoroughly. Last time this happened, same symptoms, a thorough cleaning did the trick. If not I'm going to have to do something. -- A bad picture is better than no picture at all, and I would rather have a picture with some noise and details, than an picture with no noise and no details. |

gugarciPremium join:2004-02-25 Bergen Co | reply to gugarci Update,
On Saturday morning I decided to try cleaning out my PC and everything around the GPU. After reconnecting everything it still locked up withing a few minutes. Opened up the PC again and did more cleaning. This time while examining the fan on the GPU I noticed it wasn't moving freely. Cleaned the fan area portion with Q-Tips but it didn't do anything. Fan was still kind of stuck, required too much effort to spin.
At this point I decide to try something different. I decided to lub the fan in my GPU with a couple of drops of 3 in 1 oil. I lub it, cleaned up all the excess oil, and re-dried it with compressed air. The GPU fan now started to move freely. Reconnected everything again and as of Saturday 1:30pm eastern time all has been working well, knocking on wood.
Don't know if this will work for a long time, but it doesn't was fun trying and I can always replace the GPU. -- A bad picture is better than no picture at all, and I would rather have a picture with some noise and details, than an picture with no noise and no details. |

1 edit | reply to gugarci Got my new bundle of joy from UPS today, LOL. Using a Radeon HD 4670 1GB version. I'm a really happy person right now for sure.
Got to get LCD screen at some point. Cause the 17in CRT monitor I'm using max is 1280x1024. I was playing around with the game Red Faction Guerrilla. I maxed out the graphic settings and used 8x AA. Boy the graphics looked very nice.
Compare to the Geforce 8500GT I was using. Then again that card was only loaned to me. Till I got new video card. |
