Re: High pitched whine when accelerating

I think it's your wife in the passenger seat telling you to slow down.

I can probably count on one hand how many times she's been in this car over the last five of the ten years I've had this car.

Let alone, I said fairly faint whine . . .

i vote power steering pump. turn the wheel while the car is standing still and see if the sound changes.
My 2008 Chevy Impala was having the exact same problem and I could tell the noise was coming from belt whenever the gas paddle was depressed (regardless the car was moving or parked)... Took it to the Chevy dealership and they replaced the power steering pump under warranty.

Have your alternator tested. The bushings make a whining noise when they are mostly worn down. Had the same noise on a 2000 Maxima and that was the problem. Another tell tale sign is if the whine changes pitch depending on electrical load while idle.

Note the engine in your car has a timing CHAIN, the only belts are for accessories.

Yeah, I know about the tiing chain. I'm happy about that and not having a timing belt.

I just had to do a secondary timing chain and tensioner on a 2005 Maxima (car had 68k on it) as the chain wore into the tensioner and it was rubbing on tensioner assembly. I would try to disconnect the accessory belts and see if noise still there, if so it may be inside timing chain assembly.

The Maxima I worked on had a whine that got faster with engine speed and when I listened to it with stethoscope it was loudest in timing chain housing near both cams. Hope it is alternator for you as $$$ price job (11.0 hours flat rate). Good Luck!

Engine was clean inside and when done sounded great, there also was TSB for replacing secondary chains and tensioners due to premature wear. The one I did wore all through the shoe and was riding on tensioner "button".
