Re: How do you know which PSU to choose? I'll just add for the heck of it, because the power connector thing has been answered, that there are two camps regards PSU, one believes in multiple 12V rails and others believe in one; I believe in one and these days it's hard to go wrong if the 12v rail is at least 40amps or more. Of course all PSU are not made equal, by far.
Those that tend to have reliability on all rails, as a short list are (But not limited) and my own order:
• PCPower&Cooling. • Corsair • Antec
One I have avoided, simply because of the bad reviews over the last 20+ yrs is Enermax. Also, anything cheap is exactly that, cheap and not something one wants for their main engine.
The best way to measure a need for those that are not sure is to offer up what the video card is going to be, how many HD's [type] & Optical will be used and add on cards, simplistic and basic, but helpful. |

 | Not as simple as just picking a 1kw+ PSU. The 1kw PSUs will usually solve your hard to calculate power requirements and most are excellent quality. That is unless you are running crossfire 5970... in that case, you might need two 1kw in a P190 case. |

| My old site has gone, since losing Aristotle SDL. It's nice to know that the FAQ now incorporates some of the comments of the review I did on the PCPower&Cooling 510W back a couple of years ago. Anyway, for anybody wanting a basic understanding the following link will answer many questions people have.
A revised 910W [Effective 1000W] will be out next week, increasing the efficiency from 80% to 88%. 74amps on the 12v rail. Should be around $175.00.

| Apparently you didn't read part of the response above
I don't need a FAQ on PSU, I test them, that was for those that may have interest in checking out another variable for information. |

 Antec 300 Illusion | Corsair VX450 |
I recently built a computer using an Antec Three Hundred Illusion. It costs $10 less, has (2)front intake 12cm blue LED fans, (1) rear 12cm exhaust fan and a top mounted 14cm exhaust fan. Each fan has a 3-speed switch attached so you can adjust them from Low-Medium-High settings. It is a nice case and has excellent cooling, especially in this price range.
Additionally I am using a Corsair VX450 Power Supply Unit($69), upside down as others have noted. The PSU is of excellent quality and if you do any research I believe you will find that Corsair leads the PSU market for quality. They also carry a five year warranty. Important note if you install the PSU upside down do not remove the label from the PSU as it will void the warranty. So if you cannot live with the label being upside down then opt for another manufacturer for your PSU. |

1 edit | reply to Tursiops_G said by Tursiops_G:The connector HAS 24 Pins, and WILL Fit straight into a 24 Pin Motherboard without needing to do any modification... WHEN connecting it to a *20 Pin* Motherboard, You just *BREAK OFF* the extra 4 Pin section, and then just tie it back/leave it disconnected. -Tursiops_G. I installed a new PSU on friday and this had me a little confused at first but then I figured it out.. what I did not get is why I had 2 extra 12V+ plugs to plug into the mobo.
also it seems the new trend is to have PSU in the lower part of the case? -- It's NOT Ni-kon It's NE-KON!
