Let me point out the obvious difference between the average rapist/murderer and the people you just mentioned: Motivation.
Someone could rape/murder a single person, and if they are doing so with the intent of affecting national policy, social issues or any political issue it is terrorism. While I disagree with people who say this: I do see logic behind the argument that warfare is state sponsored Terrorism.
Conversely, someone can mail bombs, blow up buildings and fly planes into buildings, but if they did it for their personal enjoyment, it's not terrorism.

| So under your definition, Ft. Hood wasn't an act of terrorism. He wasn't a guy trying to make a political or social issues point. He was a guy who had no problem collecting a paycheck from the military, but then flipped out when asked to actually earn it.
This wasn't terrorism, it was an act of a guy f$cked up in the head.

The fact that the cleric pointed him in one direction over another doesn't really matter. This jackass was going to do something, because he was too chicken shit to earn his pay. He wasn't trying to make a political statement, or strike fear into the country. His actions were about him.
I'm not suggesting he's a good guy, or even any less of a bad guy. But claiming a lone gunman is a terrorist lessens the inpact of the word.
