Re: What is the best.................

Not to be unhelpful, but a search of the security threads will turn up a lot of recommendations, and as others have pointed out, the AV poll is the best place to start. It has links to the various software manufacturers where you can check which one offers the product you need for your specific circumstances.

Just as a matter of record, the most frequently recommended AV's here currently are (in no particular order):

Avast
Avira
NOD32
NAV 2010
Kaspersky
Microsoft Security Essentials
AVG

There is no "best" one. Each has its strengths and weaknesses. Another factor is what plays well with the software you have on your system; the only way to determine the "best" AV for you is by trial-and-error. We can only tell you what works best for us on our particular set-up. The "best" approach is a layered one using security products that complement each other, and the use of commonsense when surfing and downloading.
