OmegaDisplaced OhioanPremium join:2002-07-30 Cheyenne, WY | [COLORADO] E-470 So I heard I rumor that if you drive in the center of the road (car in both lanes) that you can avoid getting your license plate's picture taken with the camera.
Any truth to this rumor?
I think the automation process on E-470 is stupid, such a complicated matter for $5 in tolls. I think I'll take 25 to 70 from now on to get to the airport. -- Whats smells like blue? |

 | WHY don't you try it and let us know if it did ? |

OmegaDisplaced OhioanPremium join:2002-07-30 Cheyenne, WY | reply to Omega I did. But I won't receive the bill in the mail for about 25 days.
Thus I want to know if anyone has had experience on the road. -- Whats smells like blue? |

OmegaDisplaced OhioanPremium join:2002-07-30 Cheyenne, WY | reply to Omega So far, I have received 1 bill for $2.50. Which means I got by at least one camera. I have to wait a couple more days for my return trip from the airport to see how if I got billed.
But, I think I saved $2! -- Whats smells like blue? |

I think you're using old information to derive that thought. There are no more 100s of dollars in fines. There are no more cash toll booths. If you don't have an auto-pass, then they bill you the regular toll based on your license plate registration. That's their deal since July 2009. In the past if you drove through the Express lanes without a pass, that would be risking a heavy fine. Without the cash booths, it is considered "license plate toll" ... the only heavy fines with license plate toll are if you don't pay the mailed bill by the due date. |

There are no cash tolls. If you don't have an ExpressPass, just drive as usual and the bill will find you (the owner of the car) in the mail at the same rate you had paid cash last spring. The only penalties are if you don't pay the bill received in the mail. They simply replaced the whole manual process of employees and cash collection with a computerized toll collection process -- overall, it's supposed to be more economically efficient to the highway authority.
The fuzz will leave you alone if you don't have an ExpressPass. |

That's the entire point I'm trying to make, the original poster was trying to scam the system by trying to drive through the toll readers/cameras in-between lanes. Try that in front of a state cop sometime and see if you don't get pulled over and ticketed. Trying to avoid the cameras or obscuring your license plate will get you a ticket and a hefty fine. -- Don't touch that, it's the history eraser button you fool! |

Trying to avoid the cameras or obscuring your license plate will get you a ticket and a hefty fine. do you think the IT guys at E-470 are 12 years old? Don't you think that maybe several different international vendors designed their product so that cars couldn't avoid the tolls by driving between lanes, or smearing their license plates with grease or obscuring them with "read proof" lenses? Do you think E-470 would invest several million dollars in such a system without traveling to other states to see how working systems on other roads were ensuring that wise guys couldn't avoid the system with juvenile attempts like driving in between lanes? Do you think that the E470 guys haven't talked with toll roads across the country to identify all the goofy tricks that could be tried? Do you think they don't keep track of all the guys driving between lanes or obscuring their plates and post their pictures on internal bulletin boards and hope to see them in King Soopers so they can laugh at them? |

OmegaDisplaced OhioanPremium join:2002-07-30 Cheyenne, WY | Hate to break it to you, but out of 4 cameras, I only got my picture taken by 1. I've received no summons, no fines in the mail. I really think you are giving too much credit to their system.
Yes I am scamming the system. No, I do not care. I find the tolls on E-470 to be a scam. Did you know that the tolled parts of 470 are the HIGHEST toll rate per mile in the whole country? It's ridiculous. You can drive across the state of Indiana, which is about 160 miles for $8.50. It costs $5 to drive from I-25 to the airport road (20 miles).
For the record, I am not using E-470 again, I'll take the longer I-25->I-270-> I-70 route to avoid any hassle.
As for the out of state question, my car is registered in Ohio, and the bill eventually found its way there.
E-470 was supposed to be I-470 but the dumbass politicians took the money for the interstate and used it on Denver (read the history). E-470 is also having trouble being profitable (I wonder why?).
I'm against toll roads in general, but any attempt to automate it, I am even more against that. I feel the same way about red light cameras and speeding cameras. -- Whats smells like blue? |
