[DSL] Optimizing Connection

Results:

»/tweakr/block:···ia=pppoA

Test Results:

SpeedTest.Net results:

I used Birmingham as my closest city.

Internet connection: DSL
ISP: Opal Telecom?
Speeds:
DownStream Connection Speed 4820 kbps
UpStream Connection Speed 934 kbps
Router : Netgear DG834GT

OS: WinXP
Network of 3 other machines and 1 Xbox.

Just looking to optimize my speeds, i get occasional spikes in games also, usually run at 60-90 ms in games but sometimes it spikes to nearly 200, on European servers. Maybe this is something to do with my settings.

I have been recently having problems with disconnects also but this could be because of the bad weather we have recently been having?

• The last speed test that you posted is fine. I have seen that a lot this week. One site is good and the others are poor.

• I do not think that this is a tweaking issue. Try this for now:

Download DrTcp

Set Tcp Receive Window to 42108

Set Windows Scaling, Time Stamping, Selective Acks, Path MTU Discovery, Black Hole Detection to Default.

Leave Max Duplicate Acks and TTL Blank

Using the drop-down menu in The Doctor set your NIC’s (Ethernet adapter’s) MTU to 1492.

Save/Exit DrTcp

Reboot

Rerun the Tweak Test

Run Two Speed Tests from the two DIFFERENT cities nearest to you that are listed here: Speakeasy POPs

Also, test here »ftp://ftp1.optonline.net/test512

Note your transfer rate after about 30 seconds. Then cancel the download.

Post the URL for the New Tweak Test. For the TWO Speakeasy Tests, Copy and Paste the speed results from those tests and note the speed from the FTP download test.

Besides those speed tests run one from that last site that you posted above.

Second is from San Francisco, CA

Last Result:
Download Speed: 3648 kbps (456 KB/sec transfer rate)

SpeedTest.Net

First Test from MaidenHead

Second Test from Birmingham

Seems I still have frequent disconnects, i'm beginning to wonder if this is something to do with my ISP

• where are you located?

• Speeds look good so far. We came back to that in a while.

• The link to your LQT does not work for me. Can you please post another one?

LQT : »/linequality/nil/2590768

Says i'm still unpingabble even though I have opened Echo requests.

I am situated in the West Midlands, England.

Thanks for all of your help so far.

Edit: I was browsing my results for my speedtests on Speedtest.net and noticed an odd one.

3 months ago I had this

But now i'm only just hitting over 4Mb's down.

• Make sure that the router and any SW firewalls are not blocking the pings. If you have a SW firewall what is it?

• I have been reading some stuff on the MTU for your ISP. It seems all over the map with every one having different cuts on things.

Try this:

Go to Start/ Programs/ Accessories/ Command Prompt and type the following:

ping -f -l 1472 www.dslreports.com
(That is a dash lower case "L," not a dash "1." Also note the spaces in between the sections.)

Press Enter. Then reduce 1472 by 10 until you no longer get the "packet needs to be fragmented" error message.

What do you get on the above packet size ping through OK?

Note:If you can ping through with the number at 1472, you are done! Stop right there.

• Does your MODEM have a diagnostic page that shows your stats? Sync rats and signals? If so paste what you get.

Okay I used the Command Prompt commands like you suggested I got at low as 1402 before I was getting replies.

C:\Documents and Settings\User>ping -f -l 1402 www.dslreports.com

Pinging www.dslreports.com [209.123.109.175] with 1402 bytes of data:

Reply from 209.123.109.175: bytes=1402 time=130ms TTL=52
Reply from 209.123.109.175: bytes=1402 time=130ms TTL=52
Reply from 209.123.109.175: bytes=1402 time=129ms TTL=52
Reply from 209.123.109.175: bytes=1402 time=130ms TTL=52

Ping statistics for 209.123.109.175:
Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 4, Lost = 0 (0% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
Minimum = 129ms, Maximum = 130ms, Average = 129ms

I'm not using a SW firewall only the Windows XP one which I have enabled echo requests in, the only option I can see in the router settings is 'Respond to Ping on Internet WAN Port' this is the only option I can see in relevance to pinging. Its currently unchecked but I can check it if this is the correct option.

I'm not sure what has been wrong with my connection recently, seems to be dropping and pretty much instantly reconnecting.

This is my Router Status Page -

now add 30 to the 1402 and put the total (1432) in your router (manual mtu settings)
I used to have a lot of drops... I changed my telephone line to cat5e with a direct connection (no telephones on it) to a Corning POT spitter and put the telephone on a direct cat5e line coming from the same POT spiltter. I unhooked all the telephone wires at the source where they come in the house.
Just done it today and so far only one dropped connection.
speed went from .750 to 1.6 by doing this (not bad considering my DSL is only supposed to be 1.5)
BTW the POTS splitter separates the DSL to go in one line, and the telephone signals in another.
you put it on at the main connection coming in your house. around 75 canadian dollars... well worth it.

cheers and good luck

randy

You would add 28 to get the MTU. Not that it matters much here since we are talking about 2 packets.

• Set the MTU in The Doctor and in the router to 1430.

• The router should be set to ALLOW pings. So the 'Respond to Ping on Internet WAN Port' box should be checked/Yes.

• The MODEM is syncing at your advertised rate; so that is good.

• Your signals are all OK.

• It looks to me that you are getting good speeds using the local test sites, but the long distance speed tests are a mixed bag. On the surface everything looks OK.

• It would help if you can get the LQT to work.

• Lets go backwards ...
Go to Start/ Programs/ Accessories/ Command Prompt and type the following:

tracert dslreports.com

Let it run and then C&P what you get.

tracert yahoo.com

Now pick any local site and do the same thing.
Sometime the tracert will not if you don't put www. in front of the site.

Okay I have set both the DRTcp and the router MTU to 1430.

Also allowed it to respond to pings, running a LQT as i'm writing this reply.

• "Edit: By the way would you recommend using the UberGT firmware instead of the Netgear?" Sorry I missed that. 3rd party SW is usually pretty good and has more functions than the the stock SW. I am using Tomato on my router.

• LQT and tracerts look fine.

• When you did the ping test for the MTU, add 28 and not 30 to get your MTU.

• I really cannot see where issue is, but lets try a few more things.

• I don't think we tested without the router in the mix. Pull the router for a while and see if that helps.

• Can you get your hands on a MODEM for testing purposes?

• Is it one site that you have issues with, or is it all over the place?
