| looking for an on-demand scanner I'm looking for something along the lines of an on-demand anti-virus scanner. A stand alone program that can scan and clean, but only when loaded. I don't want any processes running in the background when it's not in use.
Reason being is that I use a somewhat older laptop to run windows 7, and also play WoW. My framerates suffer even more with an active scanner running in the background. And the start up time increases annoy me.
I'm not terribly worried about the risks involved in not having an active scanner. I don't browse porn, don't download shady torrents/files, and I run no-script along with site advisor in firefox.
Any suggestions would be appreciated. =) |

ashrc4Premium join:2009-02-06 australia 2 edits | reply to grazed The only two i am familiar with are avira and a2. Avira can be installed without the real-time component. avgnt.exe (system tray) uses 968k at idle. shed.exe (up-dater) 280k at idle. A-squared (free) needs manual updates (available several times a day) yet has no running processes. It has both virus and spyware (dual) engines and excellent detection. A few Initial false positives likely for some but for me that was it. Each up-date re-scans the quarantine file and submitted fp's are quickly resolved. EDIT: added out to without. EDIT 2: free added. -- Paradigm Shift beta test pilot. So far nothing to report. Now is the not right time to stop folding. |

| reply to John2g Thank you. Will check this out!
@HA Nut: Thank you as well! I didn't know avira had the option of turning off the real-time agent. Will definitely check this out as well.
And all along I thought I would be stuck with the web-based scanners. =) |

Mele20Premium join:2001-06-05 Hilo, HI kudos:4 1 edit | How did you manage to get the page in Russian? It's in English. DrWeb is known for many false positives (so is Avira). There is a HUGE difference though in that with Avira you can configure Luke Filewalker to "expert mode (combined)" so that it will run a full scan and at the end list any malware found and wait for you to take action. With DrWeb, you cannot do this. I refuse to use any antivirus that cannot be SAFELY configured and DrWeb is one of many that cannot. I do not want any action taken on a file until I have examined it and then decided what to do. Anything other that is potentially very dangerous ESPECIALLY with an AV with a long history of a very high number of False Positives.
I learned the hard way long ago with NOD32. NEVER, EVER allow an AV to delete ANYTHING without you first examining it. NEVER allow it to place anything in quarantine either without first examining it. I lost my ENTIRE Outlook Express Sent Items folder (over 5000 emails) when NOD32 decided to delete it because it had a virus (Eicar) in one sent item. Obviously, that was a serious bug and I was the unlucky user who discovered it. But this sort of thing could happen with ANY AV. NEVER use an AV that will ONLY do automatic stuff. That makes it a junk AV!
I know CureIt says it will clean and if it can't clean (90% of anything it finds) it will put those in Quarantine. I would not trust it to let me restore from quarantine. I couldn't restore from Avira quarantine recently. Doing so, corrupted the files. NEVER, EVER allow an AV to do ANYTHING automatically that involves messing with your files in any way. -- When governments fear people, there is liberty. HA NutPremium join:2004-05-13 USA | Mele, have you ran CureIt lately? The setup options can be told to only report issues if the user wishes. While I agree that FP's can be a serious issue, I go with the defaults anymore because I have not had any false issues with CureIt for quite some time. |

When you run the installer it gives you the option to not install the real-time component. If you change your mind later you simply can re-run the installer and add it over the top. This works in reverse also. A new build along the way may need a new/updated installer possibly however. EDIT: spelling -- Paradigm Shift beta test pilot. So far nothing to report. Mele20Premium join:2001-06-05 Hilo, HI kudos:4 | You should have been a beta tester for DrWeb version 5. Much of the beta access was in Russian and the beta forum had only ONE thread in English! I'm afraid I turned out to not be much of a beta tester for them.
The beta for Avira version 10 just started and I find German screens and phrases in strange places. But Avira is always like that in beta and doesn't fix the language problems until late in the beta. -- When governments fear people, there is liberty.
