Have often do you even need to talk and surf at same time?

I can't recall a time where I needed to talk and surf the web at the same time.

Same here. Though I tested it just a few minutes ago to prove it was possible on Sprint by using WiFi for the browsing part.

I've actually done it with talking to somebody and looking up Google Maps on my T-Mobile myTouch 3G with Google on the robust T-mobile 3G network.

How is it better when it's almost non existent in cities where it matters?
T-mobile is right up there behind Sprint Pcs as the ghetto provider in the US.

Its better when:

1. There are less than 1/2 the amount of users
2. There are few devices
3. Devices aren't data hogs like iPhone
4. No 'rebanding of existing' spectrum to deploy. It was AWS, not used by GSM.

Bonus points if you were browsing and talking while driving.

Its good in two situations. For example, discussing an email, or emails, and using navigation software. Plus if you want to discuss an MMS. We do this all the time shopping for junk. Seriously its a great feature, which most dont even know they have.

I just can't seeing it as really being a deal breaker for most people, especially when AT&t's 3G network is so spotty. BTW, Verizon's VZ navigator will work while making a phone call or looking at emails.

Well if you live in a metro area, like New York, all 3 are the same in terms of coverage. ATT, Verizon, Tmobile. Once you get out into the suburbs and rural areas its another story.

Even in NYC I have had trouble with ATT. I'm in NYC almost every day and some portions of the outer boroughs such as Queens and Brooklyn ATT drops out.

I agree. Until someone posted that on this site a few months ago, I didn't even know CDMA was incapable of it. I've never needed to do that, although I can see where a cell phone super-dooper-power-user might need that ability.

I actually use it a lot during calls to make appt's, send emails also it's nice if you have phone you can tether off of. That way you can connect your laptop and still make calls.

I am surfing the net a lot, checking email in the background, and even streaming pandora. Now if I'm doing any of those things on Verizon, I get no incoming call. So you may not care to talk and surf at the same time, but for those who don't send incoming calls to VM all the time, will not like the fact they can't surf the phone while waiting for a call, or worse yet, can't get a random incoming call (e.g. customer, emergency etc.) while surfing the net either. So, most people who are not doing the calling may never even know someone called unless they leave a voicemail (and you'll have to pay an extra $1.99 for visual voicemail on verizon too).

That doesn't seem very likely, at least not in a "1XEV" 3G area. I have Sprint service, and I constantly stream Pandora ("high quality stream"), surf with Bolt Browser, and communicate using various text messages (BB Messenger, SMS, SKYPE IM+) depending on the person, and whenever someone calls, my phone rings and I have an opportunity to answer it. Same thing with the Navigation tool, the phone rings and gives me a choice to answer or ignore. If I decide to answer the call, as soon as I end it Pandora picks up right where it left off, as does my Navigation tool. The Navigation tool will even automatically reroute, if for some reason I missed a turn while talking on the phone.

I just tried it while listening to Pandora and reading this site in my phone's browser. I called using my office phone at my desk and my cell phone rang and showed an incoming call with my work caller ID info displayed.

This is with a BB Tour, which Verizon also sells, and I imagine that both would work the same way. It's not like you can't receive a call when you are using the data services.

Ahhmmm , ok , my droid , surfs web , streams music via shoutcast and can take a call with no issues , I don't miss calls. my music just gets held back until I end the call.

Would you really want music while on a call ?

Not music on the phones storage or card but streaming music is what he was talking about. Which isn't really what this is talking about.

It's more about the being able to use data and cell at the same time. Once LTE comes to VZ they will as well.

I've posted above... that I'm the opposite.
I currently txt and run SSH over WinMo (pocket putty) and RDP. Its a REAL PAIN when an SMS or call comes in and drops the SSH / RDP session.
This is used for Work... not fun. I have this issue with the Sprint Treo 800w and not on AT&T HTC Tilt.

I'm actually fascinated by this thread. I guess if you don't use your phone for business or anything then talking and using the Internet at the same time isn't important.

I personally have upwards of 3-4 lengthy business calls over the course of the day and if I wasn't able to receive and respond to emails while on those calls, I wouldn't have my job. One of the primary reasons AT&T power users waited anxiously to get off of Edge[2G] (other than horrifyingly slow speed) was the ability to have the internet WHILE on calls.

It's great if you don't need that but don't kid yourself by thinking it's an invalid point. I was actually considering Verizon right up until I realized that limitation of CDMA.

Re: Have often do you even need to talk and surf at same time?

I do use mine for business. That is why I have a Blackberry. I have never needed to talk and surf at the same time and did not know it could not be done until I saw the news article. For most people it is probably not a big issue. AT&T is trying to make it a bigger issue than it is, but the irony of it all is that their 3G network is so sparse that many times you can't do it on their network either.

Re: Have often do you even need to talk and surf at same time?

I use mine for biz and I've never needed to be on the phone and check emails arrived while I was on the call. If I have a lengthy call, I'm always in range of wifi or I have my laptop and aircard.

It was nice making the 5 hour trip from NC to TN for Thanksgiving and having 3G the entire way, as opposed to 30 minutes of AT&T 3G.

I'm usually in a situation where I don't want anyone around me listening to my conversation. Send me a text message or an email and I'll look it up. I hardly ever use the phone service on my phone. I suppose it's different for people that spend a majority of their time actually talking to people.
