Generator transfer meter thingie

Our electric co-op offers a transfer switch and plug that is basically installed in the meter base between the meter base and the meter.

Apart from possibly overloading any generator I connect, has anyone had any other issues with this? Pros and cons? It seems like a very inexpensive way to add a generator, and no I don't want a permanently installed standby generator.

What do you mean by "offer"?

Do they install it for free?

Probably at a cost, but also to make sure that it is installed properly, and will not backfeed into their system. There are some co-ops that will pay you back if you use Green Energy such as Geo-Thermal, etc.

When I mean "offer" I mean that you will buy it from them and they will install it for you. They quote one price that includes the part and installation.

I'm not 100% sure but I believe that anything that touches the meter they have to do. In any case I would not let anyone else near the meter except them.

Correct. It is at a cost but it is not for renewable energy. It's solely for connecting a generator.

About a grand installed. Maybe more depending on your area.

It's called GenerLink.

I'm in the middle of planning to install a transfer switch and the Generlink gizmo caught my attention when it was mentioned on another website I hang out on.

It looked good at first but it's not compatible with my generator (something to do with the way it's grounded).

It seems like a good product and has received solid reviews, but check to make sure your generator will work with it before you spend money. The Generlink website has a long list of almost every make/model for you to check.

I'm probably going to go with this:

I'm holding off buying it until I can verify with my electrician that it will work for my application.

Nice safety feature, but overpriced. A transfer switch installation is typically cheaper.

That's what I figured. I may end up getting one and having a local electrician wire it up.
