Re: Climate Change Scandal Erupts After Email Hack. There seems to be some question as to whether this was the work of an anonymous hacker, or perhaps instead by an insider. Based on the quantity and scope of the material, the insider/whistle-blower theory is beginning to look more plausible. Perhaps a disgruntled employee (or former employee) decided that there was just too much deception and stonewalling going on to keep it all under cover.

 | Here is another theory about how the files were accessed that may be of interest to security-oriented readers.
"The CRUtape Letters®, an Alternate Explanation" presents a 3rd possibility other than hacker or insider:

 | In an attempt to bring this thread back to the topic of security issues, I'd like to link to this article, More on the "RC Hack":

It seems that some of the leaked emails contained user names and passwords. This is very dumb practice for several obvious reasons. One of the theories is that a leaked username/password combination allowed access to the block of embarrassing emails.
If you are interested in searching through the emails without going through the effort of reading them all, go to
»www.eastangliaemails.com/
and search on keywords like "password". There you will see username/password combinations in plaintext in some of the emails. Not only that, but there is one where the username is an individual's first name, and the password is his last name!
