Re: As an AT&T customer.. I think that's with GSM (2g) on AMR-half rate codec. I would agree with you on that (garbled).
GSM on EFR or AMR-full rate is close to land line quality, and IMO, better than that of CDMA.
3G UMTS vs. CDMA ... not much of difference. I've found CDMA EVRC codec to have a more digitized/robotic sound , and to some extent, very aggressive DTX cutting out sound at the end of or start of speech.
