Instead, why not introduce a low that restricts unfees? Perhaps mandate that the advertised price of service match what is on the bill.

1 edit | Re: Useless When I say the unfees should be included in the price, I am talking about any fee that is not a tax imposed by a government entity (so those "regulatory cost recovery fees" would have to be included in the advertised price). Compare it to when you go to a store to buy something, you see the price, but when you check out, you see the price + sales tax. That's what I'd like to see.
I don't even care how the companies break down the fees, as long as the pretax price is the same as what is advertised, it would be good.

| Re: Useless I'd go a step farther and say that the sticker price for a plan should be the price you pay. Gov't taxes vary widely between states, so things are still a bit obtuse unless the carrier shows the percentage tax on the plan upfront, which would be okay as well. | |

| | I agree this is useless...not really because it just wastes tax dollars, but because it's really just too subjective and easily manipulated. As all other posters have pointed out, there are ways for carriers to get around this in virtually every way imaginable. Even if this bill is passed and it puts some kind of restrictions on the hard dollar amount, we all know the carriers will find some other way to take it out of us. They are in the business of making money and will not just roll over because one little bill keeps the ETF's from going up. | |

Mount Airy, MD | Re: Useless Personally I could not care less if my ETF was $1000, or even $1 million. I do not and I will not pay one, ever. If I switch carriers and I find the service stinks within the return period, I return the device and cancel before the ETF hits me. It is no big deal at all.
If this type of bill were to become law we'd become like those places where there are no contracts, but you end up paying the full price of any phone you want to buy, and that would be your only option.
I like how we have things set up now. If you want a contract and enjoy the lowered cost of the phone, that's cool. If you don't want a contract and want to pay the full price of the phone skip it, that's cool too. What is wrong with having choices like these?

Mullica Hill, NJ | i agree with the stuff about prices including tax. ok the TV ads shouldnt have to due to wide area. but when you go into the store or onto the website(both being stores that can be localized) it should show before you even see fine print of contracts in big plain text a full breakdown of what the bill would be out the door.
i mean i goto the Wawa or the Exxon and the price on the sign is what i am paying for gasoline.
