This action by Apple of defending AT&T vigorously could kill off any sale of the iPhone on Verizon next year. Verizon may not want anything to do with Apple.
It is just like any other industry. Look at the companies that are listed as prefered brands. They do it to get the money. Once the contract is over, and the money is gone they will go with someone else.
