mjamike join:2009-08-25 Bridgewater, MA | [HELP] Port Forward (or DMZ) with RV042 Hello, I have a client who needs port 22 opened and forwarded to a machine on his LAN. I am only familiar with the basic port forwarding found in the routers for home use. I have tried setting up different rules in the rv042 firewall and even a wide open DMZ but still can not access the box from outside the local network. Anyone willing to help me out here? The rv042 is working with a comcast SMC8014. I actually had help first setting up these devices thanks to the kind people on this forum. You can see this thread as reference if you care to see how my setup looks: »VPN with SMC8014 and Linksys RV042
So anyways I like the people here and thought I'd ask

Have you been using a site like Gibson Research's: »www.grc.com/intro.htm Shields Up (or other remote site) to test if port 22 is open or closed? |

If this was a DSL account, I would suspect a double NAT as the problem, e.g, the modem is not passing the public IP to the RV042. |

mjamike join:2009-08-25 Bridgewater, MA | reply to mjamike So I just logged into a network using the same RV042 router and setup port forwarding without any issue. The difference is that the network that I got functioning properly does not use a comcast SMC8014 gateway (it has cat5 run from the outside pole directly into the RV042 - verizon fios).
Sooooo this helps me a tiny bit in the sense that the issue most likely lies in the relationship between the comcast SMC8014 and the RV042. The comcast gateway has an IP of 10.1.10.1 and the RV042 is at 192.168.0.1. The comcast gateway does have DMZ and Port Forwarding settings but nothing can be configured because the RV042 and all LAN PC's are on another subnet.
I would change the comcast gateway IP to 192.168.0.2 to get them on the same subnet - but I feel like there is another way.
Any help? |

I am happy that the port forwarding will work now but I don't like that we were unable to solve the issue with the existing equipment. |

I assume that you do understand that the cause of your problem lies solely with the Comcast SMC8014 device (or at least Comcast's implementation), and that your Linksys RV042 was in no way at fault?
I have no financial or other interest in coming to the aid of Linksys, but I have had experience dealing with Comcast support (both for my own service and on behalf of clients), and I know that they will almost always attempt to blame an OEM vendor rather than admit that their supplied equipment or their service is at fault (even when replacing their equipment fixes the problem). -- History does not long entrust the care of freedom to the weak or the timid. -- Dwight D.
