Re: [DSL] Optimizing Connection Okay I used the Command Prompt commands like you suggested I got at low as 1402 before I was getting replies.

I'm not using a SW firewall only the Windows XP one which I have enabled echo requests in, the only option I can see in the router settings is 'Respond to Ping on Internet WAN Port' this is the only option I can see in relevance to pinging. Its currently unchecked but I can check it if this is the correct option.
I'm not sure what has been wrong with my connection recently, seems to be dropping and pretty much instantly reconnecting.
This is my Router Status Page -

 | now add 30 to the 1402 and put the total (1432) in your router (manual mtu settings) I used to have a lot of drops... I changed my telephone line to cat5e with a direct connection (no telephones on it) to a Corning POT spitter and put the telephone on a direct cat5e line coming from the same POT spiltter. I unhooked all the telephone wires at the source where they come in the house. Just done it today and so far only one dropped connection. speed went from .750 to 1.6 by doing this (not bad considering my DSL is only supposed to be 1.5) BTW the POTS splitter separates the DSL to go in one line, and the telephone signals in another. you put it on at the main connection coming in your house. around 75 canadian dollars... well worth it.
cheers and good luck

You would add 28 to get the MTU. Not that it matters much here since we are talking about 2 packets. -- "You can observe a lot by watching". Yogi Berra |

• The router should be set to ALLOW pings. So the 'Respond to Ping on Internet WAN Port' box should be checked/Yes.
• The MODEM is syncing at your advertised rate; so that is good.
• Your signals are all OK.
• It looks to me that you are getting good speeds using the local test sites, but the long distance speed tests are a mixed bag. On the surface everything looks OK.
• It would help if you can get the LQT to work.
• Lets go backwards ... Go to Start/ Programs/ Accessories/ Command Prompt and type the following:
tracert dslreports.com
Let it run and then C&P what you get.
tracert yahoo.com
Now pick any local site and do the same thing. Sometime the tracert will not if you don't put www. in front of the site. -- "You can observe a lot by watching". Yogi Berra |
