skohly posted : If you are just comparing the TV end of the deal then your statements are pretty much true. We are in fact paying for HD in the end and the set top boxes are move expensive with Cablevision. If you factor in the Triple play against Verizon though the balance shifts back to Cable imho. With the taxes and surcharges that Verizon charges plus the features it's much cheaper with Optimum. Especially if you have multiple phone lines as I do, I run a small business from my home. That's where the value really comes in so if you have bundled packages you look at the cost of tv slightly different. If we are just talking tv alone then it's just what tv package fits you and it can change from provider to provider.

Jmartz posted :
said by EricGT :

Would you feel better if Cablevision lowered the rental price of the box, but then charged for HD like DirectTV does?

They already do charge for HD. If you have a box, you have to pay for IO Navigation at a minimum. When I spoke to customer service about it, it only includes Music Choice, you don't get anything additional outside of the family cable channels that were converted from analog to digital over the summer. If you want HD, you have to get the IO Package, which is $12/month. You can't get HD channels without a cable box, and when you get the box you are forced to take Navigation or the IO Package at an additional cost just to get those encrypted HD channels... therefore you are paying extra for it. Remember, HD is free with IO... if you have Family Cable, you ain't getting the HD channels unless you upgrade, which adds a minimum of one cable box (and remote control) $7 and a $12 programming package on top of the already extremely expensive (considering the lack of channels) Family Cable package.

I'd rather pay that than own the hardware and worry about repair/replacement.
kickass69 posted : Well if you have an analog TV, they'll at some point remove all the analog channels to where you would need a box. If you have a DTV/HDTV with a QAM tuner, you'll be able to watch whatever is unencrypted digitally until they encrypt it all and then you will have no choice but to get a cable box to receive anything you pay for as they'll make cable tuners....analog and QAM useless. I don't like it as much as the next person. It's that they rather use cable boxes instead of upgrading traps to control services. I would rather use my QAM tuner to watch any channels I pay for vs needing the currently clunky slow boxes.
