While I do have IO, I upgraded the basic cable box to an HD cable box for the same price. If you want encrypted content you have to pay for it, whether you have an HD tv or not.

If you are saying you need a box to view basic family channels on HD that may be, but you can get a number of HD stations without any box.

Sometimes I get Channels 261-263 (foreign language garbage) and Big Ten Network HD (Channel 720) every other scan. All other channels I list are consistant, yes that means CNBC-HD, TCM-HD and QVC-HD have been there since those channels were introduced to our lineups. There are 42 analog channels that remain.

Oddly enough WLIW 21 (21-1) is there with my QAM tuner but has never been mapped to the cable boxes in the Morris system. They already do charge for HD. If you have a box, you have to pay for IO Navigation at a minimum. When I spoke to customer service about it, it only includes Music Choice, you don't get anything additional outside of the family cable channels that were converted from analog to digital over the summer. If you want HD, you have to get the IO Package, which is $12/month. You can't get HD channels without a cable box, and when you get the box you are forced to take Navigation or the IO Package at an additional cost just to get those encrypted HD channels... therefore you are paying extra for it. FIOS and DirectTV also need a box on every TV, so no real alternatives with them.

So, the differential is more like $4 or $5 per month per TV. I'd rather pay that than own the hardware and worry about repair/replacement. For the monthly fee, I can swap out the device anytime with no questions asked, and I am more or less immune to any upgrade costs in the future...

A year goes by quick. Cablevision wont require the use of a box on every tv within a year and U-verse requires them on every tv NOW. unless there is another reason to switch you can't consider that a good reason.

I had a visit from a UVerse guy today. They're finally coming to my neighborhood.

One thing the UVerse guy said was that OOL would soon be requiring a cable box on every TV.

Since I have quite a few TV's in the house this could be quite costly.

Is this true?
