I'd be happy with 5Mbps/5Mbps FTTH just for the 0~1ms ping times...

FTTH does NOT guarantee low ping times. I have about 8 msec ping time to the Verizon router that connects my FiOS to the rest of the Internet.

This equates to over 100 miles of optical cable to cover less than 10 miles between my local exchange and Verizon's network hubs in Philadelphia.

I'll run a traceroute next time I'm home and attach it.
